My heart is indeed with an ML 350 Cdi, which I personally much prefer to the XC60. But it's more expensive, bigger (my wife finds the XC90 too big - I simply find it dull), thirstier, and has higher running costs. My family and bank manager are firmly with the XC60.

I am hoping to God that the combination of R-Design with 20" alloys, all the goodies it's coming with and the fact that I'll have more money in my pocket makes up for the fact that the Merc makes me feel like king of the world (and is a much better drive).

And I'm only recommending Another spends time in the Merc, not the vast majority of people who are quite happy with the XC60, for whom there seems little point. He asked for recommendations for cars that were fun to drive but also roomy enough for a child and dog.

Another hasn't picked up on the Merc recommendation, though, and I'm bored of discussing rear seat sizes, so, if Merc and BMW are out how about the Alfa 159 (in the new 1750 guise), VW Scirocco (and the dog will just have to squeeze), Saab 9-3X, Octavia vRS, second-hand Cayenne, Audi S3 (must be similar size to the Scooby), Focus RS (yes, I know, but if you want fun...), second-hand RS4?

Check out the rear seats on that little lot, Daleman. I await your measurements...;-)

My ideal would be an XC60 with a BMW engine....... Life is often a compromise. However for Fun I borrow my son,s Boxter, put the roof down, put my foot down and narrowly avoid losing my licence...

Default End of Thread

This is not the Merc forum or the "I am clueless as to what car to buy forum". Its the Volvo XC60 forum.

Let's stop this stupid and pointless thread now - Mr "I used to be indecisive but now I am not so sure" - goodbye.

You make a good point about the merc ml. A close friend has a 320 cdi 4matic which is indeed lovely but at 43 k it should be. I paid 23k for my xc60 and that was the top of my budget

Am a resigned to the compromise of an xc60 being safe frugal and dullish to drive most probably. As another poster pointed out life is full of compromises and thankfully we are all different

The thread is good. The rear seat hip room discussion is a hoot. I have never heard of anyone taking that factor into account when making a car choice. Perhaps it is significant for someone who has to regularly carry three large aunties in the back seat?

I agree that it pays to be decisive. I try to plant my feet firmly on both sides of the fence. (Long legs and a low fence.)

Somebody at this forum described us as a bunch of sweetiewives. I am not familiar with Scots traditions. Is that how sweetiewives talk about each other?

It seems a bit harsh to me, from the other side of the world.

I used that term some time ago, the term "sweetiewife" referes to somone who likes to blether (or talk). The Volvo Forum is exactly the place to endulge in this kind of activity!! We are all enthusiasts who like to communicate our thoughts, we are not always polically correct (or indeed correct!). Opinions should always be taken in context and objectively (beg to differ is really important).

However we form a valuable communication hub that can help owners overcome issues and talk to each other constructively in the interests of our investment (the XC60).

I would rather have sweetiewives blethering all the time than have fishwives caterwauling like banshees all the time

BTW - good to see that the Scots words still survive, I was caught the other day describing someone as peely-wallie - then I had to explain what it meant to the English!

I've had relations / colleagues who've owned a number of various Mercs and they're not the cars the used to be in terms of quality or reliability. On top of which the dealers are generally only interested in selling cars, aftersales service has been woeful to the point that one of my colleagues is now on his 4th dealership do to issues with servicing at 3 more local ones.

Personally - I wouldn't want the hassle of owning one!
