  • Modern aircon systems are very efficient and have little or no impact on performance or mpg.
  • The refrigerant in the system contains lubricants which are used to keep the components functioning correctly. The lubricant needs to be pumped round the system to be effective.
  • There are many joints and seals in a car's aircon system and these mustn't dry out. The lubricant prevents this. If they do dry out the car will lose refrigerant gas and the aircon will be less effective and/or need topping up.
  • Irregular use of the aircon allows mould and fungi to develop in the system which can cause odours (and health issues in extreme cases).
  • Running it all the time helps keep the moisture content down in the interior fabrics leading to less misting of the windows and a more comfortable environment.
Indeed but it dries my eyes out which makes them more tired on the drive home so I only turn it on when I am hot, even then I like to run with the roof open instead (which I am sure does use more fuel).

As an aside I followed a very dirty smelly and poorly maintained diesel bus up the long hill out of Hathersage towards Owler Bar. It was belching out smoke. We had the windows up and ventilation from the vents only. We got not the slightest wiff of diesel smoke smell in the car. Made me realise that this clean zone business actually works......

Understand, the dry air can also affect people who wear contact lenses.

I was in a similar situation the other day and it struck me how well the filtration worked.

Btw, to keep the CleanZone system working correctly, the filters must be replaced as per the schedule as they have a chemical compound in them (activated carbon) which wears out.

(For the geeks: activated carbon is what's used in military respirators to protect against chemical and biological attack.)

Default Recall info

If you need to tell the dealer what the issue is:
Recall R89707 : Air conditioner drain hose
TJ31955.1.0-2016-09-26
At 29 pages it's clearly not trivial.

Also in fish tank filters and water filters to take out toxins.

Swedespeed seems have gone quiet on the recall.
A thread has been started on the LR Disco vs XC90. Avoided responding to the comments about I would never buy anything British.

Can you give an update when you get the car back on Tuesday.
I think that your car could be the first to have the AC drain pipe checked out.
Thank you.

My colleague has an fpace. I keep telling him it is not British, it is Indian! He normally comes back with the Chinese Volvo comment....

This was the latest post, hmmm.
