How can I justify getting one living in the south? Our weather consists of clouds and drizzle, with the odd bit of sun in the summer

I agree. I live in Glasgow and couldn't justify one.

We test drove a 2011 D5 today!

It was a very tidy example, but I came away unsure:
  1. It only has 66k, which makes me think short journeys was the norm.
  2. It felt a tad sluggish and rough on acceleration. I don't know the V70 enough to know for sure, maybe it was the engine, but gut says auto-box.
  3. All the service stamps are from Volvo Doncaster, except for the last one from Volvo Oxfordshire, which makes me think the last person had it for a relatively short time, and I can't help but wonder why.
  4. There was a lot of oil residue near the oil-filter and around the black plastic intake pipes (from the turbos?).

I have a question: how can you tell which auto-box it has? Wikipedia says there were two 6-speed boxes; Ford and Aisin.

It has the Aisin-Warner box.

The Ford box is the Powershift box that was fitted to V70s that had either the 1.6-litre PSA diesel engine or the 2.0-litre Ford-PSA diesel engine. AFAIK you're not looking at these, so ne vous inquietez pas.

To my knowledge all Volvo Geartronics with the 5-cylinder Volvo engines have a 6-speed Aisin-Warner box. So do VEA-engined D2 and D3 cars.

VEA-engines D4s have a newer Aisin-Warner 8-speed box.

Corne Motors in Abingdon?

Looks nice and clean and also looks well-featured. It has the earlier 202bhp twin turbo engine.

Vehicles from late 2011 onwards have the better fascia design with the integrated screen and better layout of controls in the centre console. These controls offer better functionality and are complemented by better steering wheels controls, including a thumbwheel and handy voice control.

The TFT display offered from 2013 onward is even better.

Perhaps you need to try another D5.

My local Volvo specialist, Horton Cars in Oakley, has a much higher mileage 2014 D5 Business Edition on sale right now. It might not be what you're looking for in terms of trim and mileage, but it has most of the newer features apart from the TFT display, and it should give you a view regarding how these cars cope with higher mileage, how the new fascia and functionality work, and how the later 215bhp engine performs.

Other members might tell you more about Horton Cars but what I can say is that they tend to sell good cars and put their name behind what they sell. They also get a lot return custom.

Yes! Corne Motors, nice salesman, and a very tidy well featured V70.

I have a soft-spot for its older centre console, I prefer its simplicity and understated elegance. Like you say, the TFT display is amazing and I much prefer it to this older one. I would also prefer it didn't have the pop-up nav-screen. None of these are a deal-breaker though...

I feel like this particular V70 would need: all its fluids and filters changed (including power-steering), a long drive to warm everything up and get the DPF nice and hot, and only then would I know what's up with it.

I think you're right, a newer D5 is the way to go, so that's my next step.
