It's still better than the sub-30's I got in my Saab aero
I'm okay with ours: we did have 2 skis, 4 sets of boots etc plus 4 adults (2 of us the wrong side of 15st) crammed in (drivers privilege - I was the only one with nowt round my feet!)....so must have been way heavier than a run by yourself.

My problem is I then propelled it along around (cough....okay, perhaps slightly above) the 130kph limit for most of the way.......heavy right foot......I know I would get more if I could slow down...

Did your speed cameras work? Ours did in Holland and Belgium, even converted it into miles for us but not in Germany, but there again on the autobahn can do what you like unless there is a sign. In a 120 zone, which we stuck to and an English car came flying past, was the only one, thought he'll get done if he's not careful!

Nope, not at all in France. I thought those flashes by the road were the French wanting admiring pictures of Stormy ;-)

A fully loaded car with roof load as well in France on autoroutes in strong winds, presumably travelling at 80mph + will not achieve great figures!

Lots of hills on many of the autoroutes some of them long which kills the economy. At least the diesel is plenty cheaper than here!

Feeling a little disappointed really, thought this new engine was supposed to be super efficient. I've seen no signs of it so far!

Mike, had a few inches of snow yesterday which didn't get bashed so was lovely on piste conditions. Sunny today then snow forecast next few days. Locals are saying there might be a metre falling on Thursday!

Flux, yes I love the whole Espace Killy, next year we are staying in a brand new chalet in La Fornet. Already excited about it lol!
Maybe when the engine loosens up after the 10k mark?

My D5 AWD is averaging 38.6 mpg but I haven't had it on the motorway yet. (No roof rack either)

I'm getting 40 mpg from my XC90 but that has 77,000 on the clock and no restriction in the exhaust.

I am starting to wonder about the fabled economy on this new engine.

Given that it is only 181bhp a like for like efficiency with my car would mean an average of 42mpg which is much inline with what people seem to be averaging on this engine. This would indicate that it hasn't actually provided much new capability over the existing engines.

Perhaps a bit to contentious in my thoughts?

Pretty spot on I would say for most people driving.

The fact is real world economy almost never matches up to hype and IMO is a pretty poor reason to change car for most .

I have often seen it on car forums about people changing their car because its £30 a year cheaper on tax and does an extra claimed 5mpg, usually ongoing the hugely increased real depreciation and finance cost of getting a new car

I think engine designers are chipping away at two aspects. First, reducing fuel usage when the engine isn't doing very much at all, and second, increasing the usability of the low end of the rev range, where less energy is wasted in accelerating and decelerating the pistons. These both have the capability to improve significantly the official economy figures, and in real life, the capability to achieve good economy on very gentle driving. However, drivers who like to rev or use a lot of power are not going to see much, if any, improvement in fuel consumption.

Helpfully there is a direct comparison between the engines on a standardised test - it's at the back of the brochure so nothing particularly contentious about it.

Yes it's just a comparison under identical conditions and real world figures will be very different. My V40 fluctuates between about 40 and over a 100 mpg per ten mile distance.
