But ... I'd like to see a future where the choices weren't an array of Camrys in different suits. Which is currently looking inevitable.

That doesn’t worry me - there is an 8 year battery warranty and apparently on Volvo batteries you can replace smaller groups of cells. Other than the motors and control electronics, much of it is the same as the petrol/diesel stablemates. And within 5 years there will be specialists and alternative parts supplies and companies reconditioning motors etc.

Pretty much in the same way there are places where you can get a new screen or a battery for an IPhone without paying Apple prices.

It’s interesting to notice just how much Volvo talk about the car being more recyclable - I do wonder whether the expect it to be scrapped or bought back when the batter dies in 8-12 years ?

Imagine this concept in an ice car...

Yes sir she'll do 45 mpg but I must warn you that after 3 years she'll drop to 30 mpg and after 7 years you'll be putting more fuel in to do 20 mpg.

EV is going to be a real talking point in 20 years time, spent uranium from the power stations around the world will look like a thimble full when compared to the mountain of dead lithium that nobody knows what to do with.

What a rush, I can see my post here today being quoted on BEC (Bloody Electric Cars) Forum in 20 years time long after I'm carbon and being worn on someones finger after they marry stating "look S9 warned about this back in 2022" I won't take satisfaction from it, cos I won't be able to

Last time I remember reading anything about EV lithium batteries it mentioned longevity and performance being prioritised over recyclability. As a consequence they were really difficult to recycle - with only about 5% being recycled and appreciably cheaper to produce new. Raised energy prices has probably reduced this % even more. The upshot of this is that the wholescale adoption of electric cars will, since the supply of lithium is limited, rely at least on new battery recycling technology or more likely new battery technology - both of which may be years away from roll out.
