Default egr fault

Have checked engine top mount and yes it's US, so will have to replace. Still hoping to fix this fault without shelling out too much cash at this stage. I disconnected the MAF sensor to see how the car would run but the service message popped up straightaway so I reconnected it pronto. Checked the air hose on the turbo and it was very squishy. Will try and source a new one next week and a new fuel filter. On the lighter side, gave the car a good wax and polish and it really looked great. Went out that evening and parked under a lime tree. Doah!!!

Just cleaned my EGR and the car seems a bit more responsive but nothing major.

I can't help but think it will increase the MPG as well though

So much thanks for this information. I have done the job on my 52 plate s60 d5 and whilst off blanked the EGR . The result is fantastic. It only took me 35 mins to do complete I cleaned the pipes with Petrol and used the top of a bean tin to blank the EGR.

I now have no smoke the car is running so much better I cant explain. No miss fire no flatspot better economy. I owe you a big big thanks as I thought I was in for some big bills. once again thanks for the information and good luck to all you other guys with smoking problems. Jack.

Default Inlet/upper cleaning

Hi all, has anyone actually taken off the top and cleaned this out? Can you refit existing fuel pipes and so on. I,ve just cleaned the plenom on mine (S60 D5 2003 140K) and also blanked EGR off. The soot problem has more or less gone however occasionally after very hard acceleration i get engine service required message but this will dissapear after a few miles or if i switch off and on again. Any advice would be great thanks

did the cleaning on xc90d5 163hp-and although it wasnt as bad as some it was 40% diameter reduction-took some time to clean carbonised mess-reminded me of the plaque inside coronary arteries(different colour) but same principle-any way car was more responsive and a few mpg better-this was at 54K and 5 years old!!!

Had to take mine apart to access starter and was horrified to see the build up.

Like others I've been contemplating taking off the inlet manifold to see how much gunk is inside, but reading Haynes came across the injector fuel pipe issue, however talking with an local independent Volvo specialist, he said they have had no problem with refitting original injector pipes.

Does one need a new gasket set for the inlet manifold / camshaft cover if one takes it off, or can you get away with the original?

Out of interest, checked glow plugs and found one way high on resistance, so that was changed. Also removed others to clean / check and all ok.

D5 163 V70 auto 2003 145k.

I had to change the same injectors twice and did not replace the pipe. 6 months on and no problems.
