I noticed quite an improvement sorting out b pillar and air suspension back in September. Now Ive had 4 weeks on winters I am very happy on my winter continentals (850s) both for noise and traction other than in dry breaking (last year they were slight improvement over summers in noise but still had awful drone on motorways). Now I expect improvement in summers over winters for noise so I will not be content just going back to my old set. I expect that Volvo sorts out my replacement contisilent summers by the time I need to switch back and road noise will be the thing of the past.

The tyres are a lot quieter at low speeds. But only slightly better than my original 20"s at high speed. So I believe there is an underlying insulation issue at play also that the tyre change wont fix. I haven't had the opportunity to go over the concrete section of M25 yet though.

But the handling is much much better and it seems to be more agreeable with my air suspension. That's probably because of the extra rubber.

Thanks. I'm on the same wheels too, but had them changed prior to collection so don't actually know what the 20"s are like

I am finding too that my car drives better with the 19" strangely and I have standard suspension.
You would hope that if it is insulation it would be easy to fix. But we are all guessing as the experts at Volvo are not saying too much unfortunately. I am still hopeful that Volvo will shine through with a more permanent fix and we can all shout their praises.

Further to my post #673 I have received an email this afternoon in response to my email to Volvo rejecting their initial 75% contribution towards a replacement set of Contisilent tyres.

They have upped their offer to 90% which will leave me with a payment of £150. Still not what I was hoping for but I really don't think I will get any further,

I have therefore told my dealer I will accept the offer and he is ordering the tyres in the morning. As they have to come from Sweden and I have read elsewhere there is a possible delay in them being available I could have quite a long wait, luckily I am on the "winters" for now and the car is no where near as noisy.

Will let you know how I get on with the new tyres as and when.

Has anyone tried 19 inch wheels on Michelin tyres?

My guess is that could probably be the best compromise. It is a compromise in any case as the main issue isn't the tyres but insulation of the car. Tyres only help to some degree.

I've been watching the road noise issue since day 1, having bought a first edition with cash upfront, getting annoyed with Road noise, selling it for a huge loss, trying all sorts of wheels and combinations as test drives etc.

B pillar fix, 19, 20, 21 inch tyres etc didn't help a lot apart from subtle differences. Haven't tried 22 inch, michelins or contisilents yet.

Since I like the car very much otherwise and hope the big bugs are fixed, I've ordered a new my17 due for delivery in April or later. Now that contisilents are in picture, I'm wondering to change my original plan of having 19inch on Michelins or the contisilent on standard 20 inch inscription wheels..

Yes 19 inch drives better and also bit easier to handle. Marginally better ride and mileage. I tried them on pirellis for a while before I sold my car. Someone at sweedspeed said 19 inch wheels are much better on michelins.

How did you try all those different wheel types?

avoid the 20" wheels, they look nice but even with Contisilent tyres there is still too much noise,
