V50 D5 Manual 26,000 Miles Coverd 47 Mpg Average
I have had my V50 R-Design SE Sport D5 Manual for 2.5 Years now and love it. Comfy Quick & relatively Frugal unless you drive like Lewis or Jenson. My commute is 20 Miles each way a mix of town and open country roads and I average 47 mpg over a week. Around town this naturally drops off to the low 40's, at motorway speeds 70 Mph will see just over 50 Mpg 80 Mph will see this drop of to 47 - 46 Mpg I am sure you can gather for a Geartonic (Auto) all these mpg figures will drop by 5 -10 % as with all auto boxes over the manuals. A couple of other things to consider when deciding 2.0D or D5 2.0D Insurance Grp 10 Tax band F £140 D5 Insurance Grp 15 Tax Band H £195

I have a V50 D4 R-Design manual, get about 44-46 mpg mixed driving, me and the wife drive like Lewis and Jenson. Its got 18" wheels which have a bit more road noise but handles better I have a bad back and find the seats comfy. This is one of the best cars I`ve had I drive a ford at work and its better than that hope this helps.Oh forget to say I`ve had the car from new about 12 mouths ago done 14500 miles.

As to the back issue, I have driven V70s for years because of a serious back injury after an accident some time ago. I am lucky to be walking at all and the Volvo V70 seat is bliss for me. Rake the seat back a little more than normal, with the steering wheel bought back to you , and lumbar support on , its wonderful. Add the winter pack heated seats and its better than a physio. Many a time I have sat in the car just to ease my back.
A long test drive is a must, I bought a mazda 6 that felt ok on a short trip.... I did not have it long. I have to have auto, I have the 6 speed, which some feel is a better box, in a 2007 V70 2.4 D 163 bhp and 38 to 50 MPG. Funnily enough, the only other seat that I know works for me is VW golf, but the dsg auto box can be trouble, been there and had the bills - google it. |

Had a selection of cars over the years. Audi. Bmw. Vw. Skoda. And now
We have a v50 d5 manual. Its the most comfy can ive owned. Did 2000 miles in a road trip last year. Get out after long drive and can walk unlike the company merc! We get 43 mpg with a fair amont of spirited driving. Loads of grunt and that five pot growl.

Loving my D5. The only car that has come close is my Ford Mondeo ST TDCi. But the D5 has more power & torque....... and a lovely soundtrack!

Can't comment on the cars your considering but ....
As a lifelong VW driver I've recently bought an XC60 R Design. Was looking for comfort so originally test drove an SE, after driving the R Design I personally was hard pushed to tell the difference in ride quality. The R Design seats are far more comfortable than any VW seat I've ever sat in. Re larger wheels, depends on the tyre profile. The 18s on my Tiguan had 50 profile tyres, the XC had 60 profile tyres. I'm well impressed with the comfort of my Volvo, I suggest you take a few test drives.

I'm quite surprised as many of the members here changed their car's, from VW to Volvo's including me. I own a s40 d5 gear tronic SE Sport model, and I'm loving every moment of it. Even though I'm getting very poor mpg, but overall I love it! I'm blaming the poor mpg on the mileage as it's only done 45K miles from new.
You will love the soundtrack coming out from the D5, it's what keeps me awake when I'm doing long journeys If you do buy the D5 model, then buy one with 80K-100K miles. The engine and turbo will be more refined, and you will get better mpg. |

"Just a Focus" - by any measure the Ford Focus is a fine car. I drive a V50, my partner a C30, my son an 04 plate Focus Ghia. All are first class cars. The Focus always picked up rave reviews for driveability, performance and reliability against the Golf and was then downgraded because it didn't have a VW badge. What tosh!
