The only method to avoid it with a reasonable chance if success is simply not to tell them, and that carries it's own risks. If, as it seems, it has been registered with the new engine then that door has already slammed shut.

Trust me, the 240 was for sale new as late as the 1990s and the DVLA know all the engine specs. It absolutely won't achieve classic status without a Volvo engine being reinstated.
You may well be right - it will not affect this soldier though :-).

Given the fact the engine is at least 5 years older than the car it's in, i wonder if the DVLA would let it through as a Historic, on the assumption it now has merit of being a modified Historic vehicle within it's timeframe before it became Historic.

In other words, it shows relatively new cars at one point were modified and without including those if they make it to a ripe age, it's "deleting" something from history?

Once upon a time there was a "Triumph Stag estate", a conversion NOT approved by BL but done nonetheless. A standard Triumph 2000/2500 Mk2 estate (then new or fairly new) would be sent off to a particular engineering company who would source a new Stag engine from BL and any other ancilliaries necessary to fit it and convert the "humble" 2000/2500 to Stag V8 power, uprating other components as needed to Stag spec to match the power. Eventually BL got wind of this and stopped supplying engines so good used engines (from accident damaged cars) were sourced but eventually this conversion stopped happening.

The car did not have the engine (or even a similar one) that it left the factory with but was a bona fide conversion back in the 70s. Not sure if any survive but as most were converted when new on delivery miles only, it's hard to justify not accepting them as Historic.

Along similar lines would be the Crayford convertible conversions, thes are generaly recognised as Historic and the conversion from hard to soft top would have been done when new/nearly new, similar to the Triumph above.

I'm wondering how/where the DVLA really draw the line as to whether a car is Historic or not - although in their printed material it seems concise and clear, there are obviously grey areas such as those already described, the Rover P6 Estoura, Jaguar XJ-S Lynx Eventer, the Panther Rio (Triumph Dolomite with posh bits) and many others i can't recall at the moment. Those i've just mentioned have no trouble getting Historic status so it's food for thought.

I just clicked on this link (I don't have a Facebook account and was surprised I could access the page, I suppose the marketplace must be a different thing).

The seller is now looking for £3,500 for the heap!

:-)
