There are three stages to this
1 What you must do IF this message comes up is to go for a 20 minute motorway run as soon as possible . This will regenerate the filter and all is ok . YOU fix the problem , there will be a fault code stored in the sytem to let the service people know what's been happening .

2 If you ignore the message then it will go into limp mode and this regeneration will have to be done at the dealer on the computer , it takes over half an hour . And 2 codes will be stored to indicate that the first soot message was ignored ...

The third stage , if you ignore the limp mode for long , you will have to buy a new particle filter .

The emissions are very clean on this engine if you look at the tail pipe it will be clean with no soot . The particle filter is how this is achieved and with average driving you won't get a problem . You don't need an additive topping up every 36000 miles OR the particulate filter changing at 72000 miles as the Ford based engine in the s40/V50
Also a motorway trip will do ANY car a lot of good if its mainly used for short runs .....so make a small alteration to your driving and you wont even get the soot message at all .
I did it today on mine S 60,150000 km, 2.4, 130 HP, 2002 model even I do not have " Soot filter full" mesage. I am not sure that my car have this, either this kind of filter and or this kind of warning mesage. Drove 20 km at 4 th and start with 2200 rpm and slowly increase rpm. At the end speed was 130 km/h with 3300 rpm. Take off high way and .................................................. .......
No coment like a rocket but I realy meen ROCKET. I was so happy .....
Later I have to go to the supermarket to buy something. Again speed up is excelente, sound beautiful ............................until i came again " engine service required" and limp mode. What did I do wrong??????
May be I have to go on the high way again ???? I will try this weekend for 30 min with same rpm and speed i order to see !!!!!
Any sugestion

No this has nothing to do with your 2002 car it doesnt have this particle filter and regeneration system

Thumbs up

Just wanted to thanks for a very useful thread. I recently bought a V70 D5 SE 185 6speed. But when I gave it some wellie the soot filter full warning came up. After reading this thread I gave the regeneration process a try on a long run today. First off I tried 3000rpm in 5th gear on a 40min dual carriage way run. But that didn't work. So I then tried 80mph in 4th at around 3800rpm for a fuel guzzling 40 mins.
That seems to have done the trick. The rest of the trip back it was full of beans and effortless power for overtaking.

Two months ago I had the same problem with my 2000 V70 D5. The around town mpg had fallen from 27 to 19 which was alarming. No warning message came on.

I did the 60mph 20min motorway run and 27 mpg was then achieved again with around around town driving. However this only lasted two weeks and it was back down to 19mpg.

I had to repeat this process three times and now its back to 27mpg for the last three weeks.

What I would love to know is what is the process that the garage uses to achieve the same result?

I bet you pay £400 for one of the fitters to take your car out and thrash the living daylights out of it.

The 2000 V70 D5 does not have a DPF. It was only fitted to the 185 bhp engined cars. Are you sure it's a Volvo engine or is it the Audi 2.461?

The volvo workshop computer carries out a regeneration whilst the car is stationary out in the fresh air , it takes about 40 minutes on a D5 ..

and it doesnt need thrashing to regenerate on the road , time is the factor not rpm . as long as you are doing over 50 mph for say 20 mins that should be enough .

Mine get's an "italian tune" now and again
Good bit of HARD driving blows the carbon out of the nucks and crannies, certainly seems to help it run better
I'm sure the 1000 mile cruise to Scotland and back helps it to regen as well though...

Agreed, that's been my experience. I can always tell when mine is regenerating as 100 miles or so suddenly evaporates from DTE, despite no change in driving conditions. When regeneration is complete, some (not all) of that 100m miles reappears on DTE.

With that in mind, my daily commute is on B-roads and unclassified roads, and average speed of about 45 mph, yet it nearly always completes regeneration within 20 miles or so.

Sometimes, if I'm not commuting for a few days and just loping around town instead, it will repeatedly fail to regenerate and then I get annoyed, and take it for a more agressive (read 'fun') drive on the faster A-roads to make doubly sure it succeeds. But I personally think any benefits of needlessly thrashing the car, in the hope of avoiding or overcoming DPF problems, are definitely misguided.
