I like the look of the P3. On the larger wheel options it looks quite low and purposeful.

If you want an XC do it properly and get an XC90

You'd also need a mortgage for the road tax.

I like the look of both the V70 and the XC70 but, being a dedicated on-roader myself, the V70 offers everything that I need with lower VED, without the additional costs of AWD and, I'm guessing, with better handling.

The uncoloured bumpers look odd, but in the right colour, I agree, it looks very nice.

I don't have the budget for one so not considering one.

I love the overall ruggedness of the Xc, and have taken it offroad on some green lanes. I remember an article describing the XC70, and it said that a 'true 4x4' will take you off the beaten track, but the XC70 will take you to the very end of the track, then you can go off and have your adventures, ie skiing, MTB,Walking,Climbing etc. It is an 'adventure wagon' not rock /mud crawling 4x4. V70's look so bland to me now, like a standard Passat, virtually no character . MPG is good as well. My D5 Xc70 2016, did a 330 mile round trip last week, for a weekend YHA cycling adventure, in attrocious weather ,heavy rain/wind etc, with a bike on the roof , upright, and still managed 43.1mpg (real) 46mpg readout, incuding a frozen start up/de-ice/demist, warm up etc.
It's all about character, all my cars have always had it, I get in the Volvo to go to the shop, and imagine I'm driving down to the Alps, and people actually do take a second glance at it, because it is different from the avg car. They will cost more, but I think i'm right in saying they sell for more as well. Best of luck in your search, I 've really taken to mine, after 20 years with a Landrover Defender, but I couldn't buy a V70, no, not for me.

I think this nearly always relates to our cars as well

Who worries about less than a pound a day on car tax?

Someone with a young family.

Pensioners.

People who buy used cars because they can't afford or can't justify a new one.

Anyone who has gotten used to £30 annual VED.

Young families on a tight budget, hard up pensioners...exactly the sort of people who wouldnt be looking at a large, expensive to buy/maintain/run car of any type, never mind anything with 5 pots and XC in the name.

The way I look at this:

£210 instead of £30 (probably) isn't going to financially cripple you, but given the choice, I'm sure one would rather spend £180 on something other than VED

In this case, I'd rather get the D5 (or a 5-cylinder D4/D3). Shame though! The D4 with the 8-speed auto is niiiiiiiice.

I have had my current 5 cylinder D3/4 (tweaked to 180bhp) for several years now and |I love it - I love the off beat 5 cylinder growl. Whenever it goes into my local Volvo dealer MOTs) I get a loan V60 with the D4 DEA 4 cylinder engine. Yes, it's quick and is, apparently, more economical than the 5 cylinder engines (my D3/4 averages 39mpg on rural roads with air con always on), but it just sounds so boring...
