Slow to fire, getting slower...
Hello all
My 1990 240 GLT has been getting slower to fire up over the last 6 months or so. It used to fire up at the turn of the key. The starter motor turns over but I now need to give it a fair amount on the accelerator to get her going. It's getting progressively worse - last night I didn't think it was going to start at all. It doesn't seem to be worse in the wet. It was serviced in September with new plugs, cam belt and new master brake cylinder (just saying) Two garages are stumped. The fuel mix was way out (0.5%) so I had that adjusted (it tends to slip out every 3 years or so) but it's made no difference (though the injector seals were cleaned in the past and not this time) It's getting very close to the day when it's not going to start. Not good as I'm taking her to the south of france in three weeks!. Any ideas? Cheers, Matt |

Hi Matt..my bus is not your spec...but i will try to throw some stuff in the ring for you..fuel pump?...or fuel pump pressure?..if it was me being the simple creature that i am i would put some petrol in the pots just to see if the bus felt like firing up..then its a fuel problem..its a strange one as it sounds like it is not drawing the fuel through to me..now that i have stuck me head up you should get sound sound advice..wish you well..hj.

Surely a case for a small squirt of Easy Start in the air intake during cranking?
If it catches immediately, fuel is the issue. Has the coolant temperature sensor been checked?

Fill it up with the best fuel you can find.
I had a problem like that which turned out to be a really bad batch of Asda fuel. I put fifty quid of Shell V-power or local Gulf in, fixed it right up. Just info, worth a try.

I had a car many years ago that progressively became harder to start then failed, new coil sorted it out after a lot of other checks got me know where.
