Older <2010 cars just need DVDs, which can be copied and shared freely (no code). Sensus cars need a set of DVDs with activation codes. Sensus Connect have 10 years of free updates, downloaded on a USB stick (no code). |

It is true that pre 2010 Volvo navigation software is freely available, and that the 2013 onwards Sensus systems get free updates on a USB stick, but the early V60s (between 2010 and 2013) have a HDD navigation system that needs a set of disks that cost over £200.
If you registered with Volvo Mapcare within the first 3 months from new, the car was entitled to free upgrades for the first 3 years. Otherwise you had to buy the disks and a unique activation code for over £200. I bought my V60 as a used "Volvo Select" vehicle and when I tried to update my maps I was told it hadn't been registered for Mapcare and therefore I wasn't entitled to free map updates. My dealership couldn't help me either and were only interested in selling me the disks. It seems that other owners have had more success in obtaining maps so it may be that Volvo have now relaxed their rules. Unfortunately, in my case I had to cough up. What hurts most is the maps I bought aren't all that up to date. The speed limits are often wrong and some roads that have been built in the last two years aren't shown on the maps. My wife's Tomtom is far more up to date.
