C30
not a diesel
May need to check boot / crate

why
small engine cars are designed to fail round about the time/miles your moms is
go for a larger Decent engine motor,, forget the "years old" as that is a total money pit
C30 = 2.4i engine (if the dog crate will fit), manual/geartronic box,,
job done for the next 100,000 miles ,

replace it with another "small engine propped up with turbo/supercharger" and you will be replacing it in another 5-6 years when that ones clapped as well

Honestly I think most new cars are all a crock of overpriced ****. These high power 3 cylinder motors will never be reliable long term and will always be expensive to fix. Most people who get brand new cars just don't look after them as they know 3 years and they'll just change them for another new car. My friend had her brand new car for 3 years and it never even seen a car wash and she didn't know how to open the bonnet when it was sold. That's why you can get some real dogs that are only a few years old.

Quite honestly, find a good mileage mid 2000s car with good service history and will be so much better than most things 4 years old. My partners mum has a 2002 Corsa C with about 50,000 miles, over serviced and it runs like an absolute dream. It's never even had an advisory. Cars that are looked after are the key...try and get her to lose this mindset of newer is better!

I agree but she want's something not that old and its her who's going to be driving it around. And yes she doesn't want an underpowered car it's caused her to lack confidence overtaking on the motorway etc..

I mean, she's had this car since new and it was serviced at the dealer for the first 3 years of it's life, 1 year at a trusted local garage and then I've serviced it for the last 2 years, changed spark plugs and even changed the coolant this year too. It has been serviced and looked after well and it's still going wrong!

I agree the car's history is important that's why I was thinking dealer used approved, if that even means anything? At least the brand is putting their name to the car so you'd hope it's better than most of the other used options.

One of my sons-in-law has an Auris hybrid he absolutely loves it[whether a dog crat would fit in the back I din't know]the only problem he's had with it was that just before Christmas he had the catalytic converter nicked off it while it was parked on supermarket car park one Saturday afternoon

You are right, especially the 'overpriced' part - I cannot believe the cost of new cars, shocking!

Lots of people run old banger....which eventually fails the MOT and decide to buy a brand new car on PCP because "it won't need maintenance"

We're looking for a 'new' car, perhaps 5 years old and loads of them with 40k miles have only been serviced once or twice in their lives this may satisfy the manfr's intervals but it doesn't satisfy my old fashioned mechanical sympathy.

My fear is a market full of quite expensive used cars but with lots of troubles ahead through lack of preventative maintenance.

These services are still not to the manufacturers intervals, as all state for example "10,000 service OR 1 year". This is what a lot of people forget. You NEED to service every year, not just when the mileage hits and people who dont understand general mecahnics dont service annualy.

I am also looking at a little run around potentially in the next few months pending the Mrs returning to work after maternity leave. The small Aygo's were a good bet, but also worth checking is the Mini one. good little car, but again buying 2nd hand is a minefield with correct servicing and well looked after.

another alternative is the newer V40's. We loved ours, and wish we could have kept it as a second car but the past year we havent really used our main car either.

Yeah exactly, I've maybe done 2k miles on my S40 and C70 in the year but they still get serviced by me on the 1 year mark for this reason! Oil degrades over time whether or not its being used.

Theoretically a good idea but how would the OP or his Mum find "a good example" unless one or both of them have significant mechanical knowledge, or have a friendly mechanic available to go and look, in addition to getting a cast iron guarantee that the history of the vehicle is genuine?
We can all chuck about examples of old cars with no issues and young cars with issues, but equally easy to find examples of the opposite and statistically speaking, an old car is far more likely to have issues.

Also, psychologically, that is going to be a very hard sell going from a 6-7 year old car to a 15 year old car!
