2011 volvo xc60 d5 awd strange noise
Hello everyone,
I am asking for some help trying to identify what causes a strange noise when i start the engine or ignition on. It started after I ve had the anual service, oil and filter replaced, cabin filter replaced, brake fluid changed and gearbox serviced. I am not saying is related to that, but it only started after this work was done and it might help identify the cause. I have tried with climate on /off,air quality system on/off, radio on /off. Is only happening after the car rests for cople of minutes, if i start the car and leave it running for a while and then stop it and start it again it doesn t make that sound. Every single time this is happening you can hear the sound 5 times like in the video i uploaded on youtube. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zyh39IlasZM If anyone have any idea, please let me know. Thank you for your time. |

To me it sounds like a servo motor running, so I'd be guessing at heater/air con flaps. I would assume there are some default car on/off positions, so turning the AC off might not necessarily exclude them.
First step would be to identify where the noise comes from with a stethoscope I think. That's going to narrow it down at least. Here's a cheap stethoscope that would probably suffice. https://www.amazon.co.uk/NEILSEN-TOO...s%2C168&sr=8-1

Sounds like the climate system trying to go through its range of movement but is finding some resistance.
Has the pollen filter got inadvertently jammed into it perhaps? Take the pollen filter out and see if there is a change/ improvement? Last edited by 37 RUBY; Jan 23rd, 2021 at 23:07. |

Hello guys and thank you for your time and help. Sorry for the late reply, it s hard to find some time between my working shifts to apply what you sugest. I took out the filter to see if any improvements and i ve seen that i have a standard mann filter so I didn put it back , I waited for.monday to come and buy the charcoal one.so for sunday i drive to work and back without a filter. Nothing changed. Soun was there. Today I bought the new filter and fitted in. When I put back the cable harness i probably didn pushed it all way through and whem I starte the engine ,I didn t heard the sound but also my display, heater, radio., parking sensors were off. So turned engine off again and disconnected and reconnected the blue plug again and even without ignition i could hear the sound... then when i switched ignition on, everithing was back to normal. But the sound was back on. I made a short video for you to see how when i plug in the blue connector you can hear the sound
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CMS0j40cBWU i don t know if i have narrowed the list of possible reasons or that plug connects so many that I am still in tha same spot as I used to be. Thank you for your time . I m not a mechanic but since I have visited few garages in the area and they said the don t do that or they need to do a diagnostic wich costs but they cant know if they gone find the fault I said to give it a try on the forum, maybe some of you have an idea.If not , maybe i hould make a booking with volvo or a car electrician. Thanks |

OK I'm still thinking Heater/Air Con flaps.
It is very likely that if it is a flap that is stuck, or not moving - broken spindle/gears etc. then a code will be stored. If you get the diagnostic codes read by someone with Volvo Vida or some other high end scanner then that will probably give you an answer. In the mean time, a couple of things.... Try changing the Heater controls - moving Hot to Cold and changing flow direction - screen, floor etc and see if the noise is repeated. You could try pulling fuses for things one at a time and see if if the noise goes away with a particular fuse. Not saying it will but it's free and may guide you. Select the fuses for the things that were not working when you pulled that plug.

Update
Hi guys,
I have played a bit with the climate and ac settings and buttons and no luck, didn t change anything. So i took it to Volvo for an investigation. They said it is 100 % the cd compartment. It might be something stuck there or something doesn t run properly, but unfortunatly if I want to fix it I must take it to a specialized garage as they don t repair cd players, they only replace them, and that is very expensive. I took my car back home, I bought a music cd and tested. It works. So nothing stuck. Also sometimes when i insert or eject the cd I can hear the noise. Dont know what s wrong with it,but if its cd player for sure I am not that bottered cause I don t use it. My only fear was not to be somethingh far more important wich can lead to serious problems. Thank you guys for all your help. |
