Well we were away last week so I never had time to do,the Volvo air con. While away we ran it full tilt for a prolonged period and it actually feels a bit colder now. Upon my return home eldest daughter tells me her Alfa air con not running cold so we charged her car up with a canister. Easy job, done in fifteen minutes. Ice cold air con restored. Tonight I refilled the system in my 911 in ten minutes and ice cold air con is restored. As soon as the new canisters arrive I'm going to charge the Volvo,up. It's simple to do,painless , cheap and when I start to worry about the legality of what gas I put into my own car after buying it legally I'm going to give up and move planet.
It's cheap to do,easy and appears to work well.

Mine was done by an A/C service guy not long ago and he required access to it. I assume the specialist equipment he uses mean it would be ok?

He might have wanted it for the low pressure gauge reading i guess , but filling it there is not the way .
