For me it’s if there are 4 mismatched tyres rather than the front different to the rear or even one odd one. Even more so if they are all really worn down or very cheap ones.

Again it's about context - if you have Michelin at the front and Goodyear at the back with maybe a Pirelli in there then maybe okay. Not best practice but equally they put their hands in their pockets when needed.

If you have Landsail and Goodride at the front, Nangkang and Cheapw4nk at the back then you can sort of assume you will have Fry Crisp & Dry in the sump... that's when to pass.

Thanks for a clarification.
You’ve missed the important ‘and’ in the final sentence - ‘If it’s being sold by someone who’s not owned it long, it’s had multiple owners and mismatching tyres, then don’t touch it unless you want a world of pain.’

I’d look approvingly on someone who has matching tyres across axles which were the same brand but different versions eg Michelin Pilot 3 and Pilot 5 say. A pair of budget (or worse mismatching budget) tyres is generally a red flag to me.

It can indicate a car that has been run on a tight budget, its a little tip that people who buy a lot of used cars look for.

Everything in context, I might just accept it for a £1000 car which I knew I was going to spend a bit on to bring up to scratch. And those tyres would go first.

What I find 'unforgiveable', yet I see all the time when I'm Autotrader window shopping, is £30k+ used cars (which cost £70k+ new) that are being offered shod in some of Tannaton's CheapW4nk specials. Champagne vehicles which have clearly been run on a brown ale budget.

You just know that the true cost of ownership of that vehicle over the past few years is simply being passed down to you if you sign on the line.

Thanks a lot to all of you. In the past I checked the tyres for wear and age, but never would have thought about that. One thing to remember for the next car!

Spot on.... in the carpark at work (well pre lockdown) there is a Audi A7 - the chap gets them new on cheap 3 year lease jobs as his mileage is low - and it's shod with "Goodride" and "Landsail". A can't wait until it snows :-)

With the XC90, whether a 2003 or 2020 car you have one of the safest cars on the road for which you will pay a premium either in the purchase prices and/or maintenance - why cripple it with poverty rubber?
