Indeed, this possible, but having seen the condition of the outgoing filter it seems unlikely.

Well seeing that I need to replace the blower as that packed up the other day (fellow member is selling me one form a donor car so that's sorted) I'll be replacing the pollen filter at the same time. The blower that came out was in quite a clean condition considering it's the original factory fitted item looking at the date code of 1998 !

As far as self servicing goes, I much prefer to do it myself as I know things have been done and I know what parts were used. Oil is the biggest rip off from dealers as the customer has no way to prove that the dealer used a high quality oil that is being charged, or that the dealer is using a cheaper product.

This has turned into a really interesting thread. I didn't expect the number of responses when I posted it! Not that I'm complaining, its great...

So instead of posting another thread & we're talking about servicing, here's another question for you chaps...

When you do your DIY service, what do you replace as such? So for example, this is what I do;

My car had a major service last week (DIY), which included; Oil, oil filter, fuel filter, pollen filter & air filter. I checked that the *brake fluid was clean & at the right level, as well as the power steering fluid. Then I topped-up of the window washer fluid, lubricated the hinges & checked the *tyre pressures*. *If the brake fluid or steering fluid was dirty, I'd replace them on the major service. The tyre pressures are checked regularly anyway, but just something I like to do on a service too. Coolant was also tested using a coolant tester.

Next year, I'll do a minor service (oil & oil filter only). Plus, lubricate the hinges, top-up the washer fluid & check tyre pressures.

Its also worth noting that I service my car each year, even if it doesn't do anywhere near the 18k recommended interval.

V70 D5 Mk111 90k

Every 10/12k new oil filter and castrol edge
Airfilter
Not due F/Filter for another 15k from invoices,

I had it into the dealer for the full belt kit about 15k ago and i went thru his list of "extra work" myself during first lockdown

Brake fluid
Pas Fluid
Coolant
Cabin filter
All swapped,

Front and rear pads, they listed the discs but i left them on till next pad swap, i have them on the shelf.

All other stuff bulbs tyres washer fluid,i check when i wash the car which is usually weekly.

I look out for offers and deals on consumables, last week i got 2 gen oil filters for a fiver each and have 20 ltrs of castrol edge along with a stock of other parts, i can service anytime i get a nice day or car is still.

As i intend to keep the car another 2/2.5 years and 50k miles i expect to swap the oil 4 times and do the aux belt again.

Kev, it is indeed an interesting thread.

I do pretty much the same. Due to personal reasons my mileage has dropped to around 3000 miles pa so I service the car once a year, normally around March April time.
  • Drain and replace the oil, replacing the sump washer, and fitting a new oil filter
  • Change the Air filter
  • Check and clean the spark plugs. I normally replace them around every 15K unless they are in a bad way sooner
  • Check fluids (steering, brake, coolant and screen wash, and top up if required. Replacing them if they show signs of degrading.
  • Check general condition of gators on steering rack
  • Grease door hinges and catches
  • Check brake pad condition.
  • Check all bulbs are functional
  • Check tyres for any ware or damage, and check pressures

I will be adding the replacing the pollen filter to the list after discussion here

Need to add, that as far as cam belt change, I get a garage to do this as I don't have option to do this myself. I've had the car since 2007 when it had 96K on the clock so had the belt done then, and even though the mileage was low, had the belt changed again in 2017 with 156K on the clock given its age.

I do apologise chaps, I didn't post this thread. I got confused, as I posted a similar one a while back thought that this was the same one . My mistake, credit goes to Bomster for this thread.

Here's other things I've had done or done myself on my car since ownership (apart from oil changes & MOT's). I haven't got dates to hand, but I do have receipts/records;
  • Fitted new Pagid discs & pads to all four corners (myself)
  • Replaced brake fluid after the brakes were done & bleeded them (myself)
  • Replaced power steering fluid (myself)
  • Timing belt has been replaced (Volvo specialist)
  • Coolant replaced (Volvo specialist)
  • Aux belt & a/c belt have been replaced, as well as the tensioner (Volvo parts, but done myself).
  • Rear sub frame bushes have been replaced (Volvo specialist)
  • Four wheel Hunter alignment (Kwik Fit)
  • Transmission fluid changed (drain & fill) in March 2020 (Volvo specialist)
  • Two part worn Michelin tyres fitted, but they're as good as new tread wise
Looking at what you do to your vehicles on each service "MCFastybloke" & "malc-c", I probably should change the air filter yearly (as opposed to every two years). When I changed the air filter recently, it was as good as new really. That's due to not using the car as much due to lockdown restrictions, but I suppose a new air filter each year would be best.

Here's my updated DIY service schedule (I hope you like it) :

Minor service (every 12 months, regardless of whether the car has done the recommended 18k or not)

-Change oil
-Change oil filter
-Change air filter
-Top-up washer fluid
-Lubricate hinges & locks
-Check tyre pressures, tread depth/tyre condition (including the spare tyre pressure).
-Check levels/condition of power steering fluid, brake fluid & coolant *Replace as necessary*
-Check bulbs *replace as necessary*
-Check condition of brake discs/pads (replace if required)
-Check wiper blades (replace if required)
-Test battery & clean/grease terminals
-Check that the battery in my torch is operational (in the boot), in case of a breakdown ***Checked regularly anyway
-Check locking wheel nut is there! **Checked regularly)
-Check breaker bar is in the boot (in case I've took it out to do another job)! **Checked regularly

Major service (every two years, regardless of whether the car has done the recommended 18k or not)[/

-Change oil
-Change oil filter
-Change air filter
-Change fuel filter
-Change pollen filter

-Check tyre pressures, tread depth/tyre condition (including the spare tyre)
-Check levels/condition of power steering fluid, brake fluid & coolant *Replace as necessary*
-Check bulbs *replace as necessary*
-Check condition of brake discs/pads (replace if required)
-Check wiper blades (replace if required)
-Test battery & clean/grease terminals
-Check that the battery in my torch is operational (in the boot), in case of a breakdown ***Checked regularly anyway
-Check locking wheel nut is there! **Checked regularly)
-Check breaker bar is in the boot (in case I've took it out to do another job)! **Checked regularly

Some items I've listed like bulbs & tyre pressures would be tested regularly anyway, but just give them the 'once over' for a more complete service basically.
