URGENT HELP / ADVICE needed - Warning lights

Summary of Problems 2012 XC60 Diesel: Seems all the warning lights come on starting with DTSC, then Brake, then Parking brake, Park assist, SBS, Power Steering, Engine coolant, Engine management and may be one other!

Parking Brake: Engages and does not allow me to move the car. Sometimes with the engine off I can disengage it. It is random as to when it will let me unrelease it. I have found when i go into the car and insert the key without starting the engine, i can disengage the parking brakes.

Engine: I think it does funny things like rev counter drops to zero and the gas will not rev the car. i suspect this is going in limp mode, but it does sometimes come out of limp mode.


So Far:
checked for water ingress, none seen. Checked the foot wells, front and back and all seem ok. No water ingress via room and i don't have a sun roof.

Reset the car by removing the NEGATIVE terminal from the battery for 15 mins and then reconnecting it. No change, same old warning lights.

Looked at fuses front, under the dash, rear boot and could not see any blown fuses.

My theory: It seems all of a sudden for ALL these faults to appear out of know where. So not sure if a single component faulty or some main board.

Plan was to see if Wickford independent will be able to sort out or if i need to go to Chelmsford main dealer and thinking how to get there. Wife and i are key workers but she wont need the car for a few weeks so we got a bit or room for manoeuvre.

Any other thoughts on this cold day!

Maybe trying a different key fob or key fob battery and see if multi connections are pushed in tight.

Not sure how a key fob battery will help? but still changed the keyfob battery!

I would invest in an OBD reader if I were you - a good one from ebay, although there is an isoft genuine dealer on the net that can be cheaper, and you get next day delivery

you will at lest be able to clear all the codes, although that's a long painfull process (!) but if you're planning on keeping the car any length of time, it's worth having one - keep it in the car for when anything crops up again.

I would add when mine went wrong I was getting random messages each time I started the car but as it was running they would all gradually creep back. SRS fault was constant & IIRC isn't reset by simply removing battery terminals. I'm not sure a 3rd party code reader can reset the SRS (maybe some of the other safety systems) lights but don't quote me on that it was some years ago on an S60 I last had a spurious airbag light issue.

Not to add further confusion to the conversation. I had similar trouble with various warning lights and the car placing itself into a fail safe mode. In the end it was a loose earth connection responsible for controlling several modules.

Silly questions, but have you been over any harsh potholes or bumps recently? This is what caused the problem for me. The earth nut wasn't tightened correctly and the earth wire lug was making a poor connection.

Hi Guys, thanks for the help. i think i have these basic OBD bluetooth read with a subscription to Torque pro. don't really hold my breath on it doing anything.

Will be taking it to the Volvo Garage on Thursday. managed to get a tow Truck from Hornchurch to Chelmsford for £80 and Volvo said they would charge £90 for diagnostics.

God knows what the final bill will be. Wish it was as simple as a earth wire being loose (where would i look for it!)

I just remember when my brothers BWM had a fault with the battery, several good mechanic's could not detect what he issue was and then went to BMW. they said something about battery charge circuit at £1000+ and then if that did not sort it out some ECU or other part needs replaced. In the end he took to some guy who specialises in BMW and the guy charged £90 for diagnostics and said i'll fix it for free! When he fixed it my brother asked what was the problem and he pointed to a small fuse that was missing!

Quick advice...

In a dilemma. I'm a little wary of main dealers from previous experience. Given that i'm getting the car towed, i'm stuck between 2 choices.

1) Main Dealer in Chelmsford - Wary of how some dealers won't really solve the problem or rather than replace a small defective part, they'll replace a whole unit and charge a lot. Its not in their interest to narrow the problem down if replacing a whole unit is easier and more profitable.

2) The independent Volvo specialist in Wickford - Worried if they cannot find the fault or have the correct equipment than i'd need to go back to the main dealer.. and that would involve another tow and mainly more hassle and end up costing more.

Anyone experienced any of them and any thoughts.

Wife suggests (1) but im thinking of (2) knowing wife is usually right!

yes, RAC said fine. Battery is also fairly new.

I wonder where this Earth wire is!
