Smile Air conditioning and fuel economy V90 D4

Hi all,

With the holiday season upon us I have noticed a marked improvement to fuel economy mostly due to less traffic. Having said that I decided to see how much impact turning off the air conditioning would have on the fuel economy and to my amazement the improvement has been huge! I was pretty chuffed to be getting 51-52mpg on the commute in the holidays up from 42-43 mpg, but turning the air conditioning off has increased it to over 63mpg on the same journey!!

I know how impressive the air conditioning is it’s almost instantaneously cool when the vehicle is started but this seems to come at a very large impact on fuel consumption, problem I have is it’s just too hot to keep this up so will be reverting to putting the air conditioning back on - anyone else noticed a large impact on fuel consumption with your air conditioning?

Eco mode has reduced aircon which is a half way house solution, you sometimes start to get windows steaming up while in Eco mode due to the reduced aircon, especially in damp conditions, when this happens a quick change to Comfort or Dynamic mode until windows are clear then back to Eco does the trick.

Of course there are other fuel saving features in Eco mode as well like coasting but to be honest I have not noticed much difference in any mode to my MPG doing the same route but that may just be the route I measured it on which has a mix of dual-carriage way, A and B roads and some steep hilly bits.
