They could quite easily refine this. I've recently bought an automatic diesel CRV and it works basically the same way. Except that it needs more brake pedal pressure to allow the engine to stop. In other words if I don't press quite hard, the engine will not stop. It recognises the fact that I have not pressed hard enough to allow engine stop and an unobtrusive notice comes up in the instrument cluster to the effect that if I wanted to stop the engine, I should press harder.

You have no idea how much more satisfying the control and predictability available on the Honda makes it compared to the Volvo. It is a simple thing but it makes all the difference compared to the over sensitive Volvo system which often cuts the engine even before coming to a stop, quite needlessly most of the time.

No, I know the slow approach technique, and how to disable it for a trip (simple old fashioned button by the handbrake), I was asking what what is the official line as to when S/S is efficient and recommended!

The official line is that you leave it to the car. It has many parameters which are processed from sensors around the car's components and taking account of the weather and all kinds of things which are processed in the ECU, which decides when it will stop the engine, whether to restart and when to not stop it at all.

Fairly sure that a good outline will be in the operator's manual. I've not read a manual yet that doesn't offer some explanation of what to expect and why.

Driver profile, at least up until now, cannot manage start\stop..
Sorry, my bad
