I wasn't talking from a value / money aspect at all. I think the private plate will have (little or) no bearing on that. I agree the 1st Sept / 1st March anniversaries will always mean a drop.

When I decided to buy a new car, back at the beginning of March, I was focused on the specification and therefore, a factory build, with the resulting lead time. I was told by the dealer that there was an 8-10 week lead time, but it didn’t occur to me to hold off, so that I would take delivery in September; I wanted my new car ASAP.

When I referred to the tyranny of new plate syndrome, I was referring to those buyers that go to a dealer and buy stock cars, off the forecourt, just to have the latest plate. If you’ve been lucky enough to order a car, for factory build, and it arrives just before the new plate comes out, then of course, get it registered as a 68 instead of an 18, and good luck to you.

As I bough mine outright, and may well keep it for more than three years, I don’t really care if it’s lost a few grand because it was registered in July and not September.

I’m also in favour of having a plate allocated to the driver, that is transferred from car to car, as other countries do.

Are you talking basic rental or PCP? If rental, then yes, but I didn’t think anyone did that any more, since PCPs were introduced.

Indeed. But I’ve bought mine outright and that’s precisely why I would rather wait 3 days for newer reg. If it was on a PCP you’d be sharing that loss with the dealer/finance company. Owning it outright, the loss would be all yours.

Not many jobs that’ll earn you a few grand in theee days, so I’m happy to wait...

Why don't we Hijack it further..........as you are on your Canadian Trip now - and you are also going to Vancouver like myself..... I was very surprised to see so many brand new S60/V60 models over there - but then the city is the global home of Amazon, Microsoft, Boeing so has plenty of high earners...!!!
I also saw several top spec new XC60' with the T6 powertrain - very fast machines.

Neither. I am talking about a lease. Some private individuals do lease cars and almost all businesses do.
