Default Foam insert before mass flow sensor

Hi,

I have recently upgraded the air box on my Volvo C30 2.0 to the K&N 57s air box and filter (which has made a real difference btw) and I noticed there was a small foam insert at the bottom of the air box before the mass flow sensor. Is this foam insert required? Wouldn’t it affect the reading on the mass flow sensor?

Any comments welcome...........
