940 mpg????

I'm on the lookout for a 940 but i'm just wondering what mpg to expect from the engines? petrol and diesel ones.

Hi and welcome.

Round town around 23mpg
Motorway/ long distance driving around 36mpg bot petrol.

Don't know about diesel, never used it in cars, but the price of diesel would put me right off.

Both obviously dependant (like ALL cars) on how heavy you are with the accelerator.

2.0 and 2.3 litre engines in the 940 range. Some with turbos some not.

Good solid cars. Get a good one, look after it, and it will outlast all the jelly moulds on the roads today.

My friend had a 940 diesel but it was really sluggish compared to the 2.3 petrol. I get 20 round town and 27 on long drives. 2.3 LPT 940 1998. I would be surprised if you get more than 30 mpg. They are solid cars and pretty near indestructible as long as you keep them serviced.

Perhaps we get too hung up on the economy issue, I consider overall running costs and with a sensible amount of care and servicing these cars (700s and 900s), especially the four cylinder normally aspirated cars (i/e non turbos) will outlast most other cars on the road - they're so durable.

No depreciation, a great forum for used parts...need I say more.

P.S I don't exclude 200s, but on the grounds of extra complexity I rule out the 900 turbo'd cars and the 700 and 900 six cylinder cars (using my recycleable and durability criteria).

My experience:

1988 740 saloon 2.3 Manual non turbo (K jet injection) - 23mpg daily, 30mpg long run;
1990 940 saloon 2.3 Manual non turbo (LH injection) - 20-26mpg daily, 28 long run;
1990 760 estate 2.4 Auto Diesel turbo intercooled - 30mpg daily, only 1 long run so far - estimated 32mpg.

Bearing in mind my right foot is quite heavy and all my driving is mixed town (traffic) and country lanes in rush hour.

The extra 7mpg far outways the extra 7p/ltr for the Diesel. Bear in mind also that its an estate, with air con, leather, climate control, 7 seats, and an auto so is much heavier than the 2 petrol saloons Ive had, and autos generally drink more anyway - especially when driven heavy footed.

I think a Diesel manual 740 with no extras would be 35-40's.

Also bear in mind I have always hated anything diesel - I only got this to try and cut fuel bills and maybe run on WVO - but i quite like it!

I have a '95 940 SE wagon with a 2.4 TDic auto. If I drive VERY gently I get 45/46 mpg, if I drive like an idiot it drops to around 30 mpg. 75/80 mph steady cruising on a motorway will get just on 40 mpg, mixed town/country driving about 35 mpg.

always get 32 to 34 mpg . local . but have had 40 . on trip to cornwall . nice and steady

with the larger turbo on my 940 turbo manual as long as i keep out of turbo range witch is about 2800 rpm i get 38 mph at 66 mph .
