After repairing the fuel pump relay a few months back, i had hoped that my suspicions were wrong. My suspicions were that the relays themselves inside it had gone "lazy". This means that despite appearing to be ok, they don't always work as they should and yesterday, it threw its toys out of the pram.
This resulted in a non-start (Fail To Proceed = FTP) scenario. As i've been suffering the dreaded lurgy for a week this didn't please me greatly, having to get down on bended knees and stick my head in the footwell to remove the relay isn't easy when i'm feeling ok, never mind when i'm rough. However, i managed it, pulled the relay out, cover off and replaced the relay. Switching the ignition on and observing no relay movement, i moved the armature on the primary relay (the one that supplies power to the rest of the system) and then the main relay that actually switches the pumps on and off started to play the game, albeit a bit lethargically. After this it carried on playing the game it should, confirming my theory of it being "lazy". Seems my only solution now is to buy a new relay - i could make a lash-up from a generic 4 or 5 pin relay simply switched using an ignition feed but i'd really prefer to have the control of the fuel ECU over the relay.

Thanks Stephen, on top of everything else i don't really need a lurgy to make my life complete!
At least it seems to be lifting at long last (had it over a week now!) and i feel less zombie, more human but got a way to go yet!

A few months on and after a new FPR (RockAuto £15 + S&H and Import VAT) and some general TLC, everything seems to be running as it should at long last so now i've started on some improvements.
As mine was missing the jacking plate from the front crossmember and had never been fitted with a rear ARB, i bought these from Luke (360beast) and they duly arrived about 10 days ago. Finally got round to doing something with them today and sandblasted and sprayed the jacking plate and the two ARB to axle brackets : Those two are the jacking plate after sandblasting. Now after painting with the two brackets as well : I've also started playing with the spare wheel : Still some way to go yet but it's getting there!

Thanks Mark, bought an el-cheapo sandblast gun on fleabay some years back and made a cabinet for about a tenner using a clear plastic storage tub, a couple of plastic ducting reducers and a pair of chemical gauntlets with Jubilee clips and some other odds and ends i had laying around.
It's not perfect but it does the job. The wheel hasn't seen any paint at all so far and the front of it won't except for the square holes round the edge.

Somehow I missed your post Dave!
Glad you are having fun with the ARB and Jack plate, as I said before the wheels look brilliant. I hope your hands are back to normal now though. |

Thanks Luke, getting there slowly between other bits and pieces and life in general!
Have had to resort to sandblasting the wheel which has resulted in the front getting scratched so will have to repolish it but was necessary to get to some parts i couldn't otherwise reach. The paws are improving slowly thanks, apparently won't ever be right (it's an age things apparently! ) but the worrying bit i had one one of them turns out to be an inflamed vein and gentle exercise is allegedly the answer. Turned out my original el-cheapo, DIY/home-made blast cabinet was too small for the wheel so i've just invested in a bigger plastic tub from Wilkos to repurpose as a bigger blast cabinet. Hopefully have more photos later today if it works!

Well after more sandblasting, using a wire wheel in the drill, one of those foam sanding blocks and other things, i got to this point today :
However, the annoying bits are these : The first two show small traces of the original primer that has so far refused to shift. I've tried all different kinds of removal and it just doesn't want to shift. I've discovered that Volvo used a 140 degree enamel paint - in other words, after spraying it on, it's baked in an oven at 140C to make it hard. Factor in 30+ years of baking in the hot sun, heat from the brakes and so on and it's like it's case-hardened on there! The third shows a few gouges on one of the spokes that didn't appear until i sandblasted the wheel. They look old, like over 30 years old so i suspect they were there originally and were filled before the wheel was painted originally at the factory. That throws a whole new risk into doing the other 4 wheels. If they have similar gouges which won't polish out because they're way too deep, my best course of action is going to be to fill those gouges and paint the wheel. I did start re-polishing the front again and got about this far : It really needs a good blast with the pressure washer before i do much more and that won't happen until at least tomorrow. I have a couple of ideas to try on those last reluctant bits of primer but i'm seriously considering abandoning the polished fronts and just painting them - maybe body-colour, on the fronts of the wheels at least. Decisions, decisions!

I think you should stick with silver Dave. I think cars always look best with nice silver wheels. It finishes the car off
If you have a wheel refurbisher nearby you could ask them to acid dip them which could get the job done ? Or in your case I'm sure you could make your own acid dip machine
