auto electrican may be needed?
Hello All,
I am new to this site and hoping for some guidance on a issue ona Volvo V50 2.4 auto 54 plate. i have the high performance 6 play CD/audio system and about 6 months ago i started to lose sound but still had power on the module and i could even change CD's etc. this fault got progressively worse and so i to it to my local dealers who downloaded the latest software (and charged) but was unable to identify the fault and said it would take 3 days - concerned i cannot afford another mortgage i decided to have a go myself. the symptions are i can get power and sound for about 20/30 seconds when i first get in the car but then silence, i found on ebay a matching media player module (cd player) and took out the floating dash, checked cable connections etc and tried with this replacement (second hand) but fault remained. i then stripped the boot compartment checked voltage on the amp or technical name as audio module, i have just replaced this with another unit of exactly the same model and when i put the key in the ignition to test all was fine, move to position 2 all ok, start the engine cuts out after 20 seconds again. go indoors for a cup of tea go back and orginal fault of 20 seconds return. The circuit diagram in Haynes is not the greatest and i assume that there must be a relay in the passenger footwell which may be worth replacing - any ideas most welcome as i love my car but cannot afford to take it to the dealers (and unable to find auto electrican interested in kent!). sorry for the sob storey, phil |

The audio system has a security on the fibre optic network so any unit that it doesn't recognise will cause the system to shut down,
So swopping parts is a waste of time as your creating more issues

Hi Rooster,
Thank you and that never crossed my mind - i assume this security block has to be reset by the dealers or can it be reset any other way. my gut feeeling is it was the amp at fault be cannot confirm. |

If the original units are returned then it should reset itself,
The Screen is the master unit and the rest are sort of slave units depending on the spec of the car, You mentioning yours has an amp so am guessing its either high perfromance or premium with 6 disc changer in dash, The security can be switch off by dealers mainly for diagnostic purposes but it doesn't have to be switched back on if you ask your dealer nicely, When the audio system doesn't have certain units there is bridge wires fitted and these can be fitted in place of units (ie amp) as the system will work with parts missing just not parts out of other cars without security is switched off

Did you ever figure out what the actual issue was? My car is doing the same except it completely locks up, can change CD's, stations, media etc...
