Dont hurt me. Diesel Clatter Additives
Hi all
Sometimes my D5 is so clattery.. it comes and go depending on the length of oil change.. the fuel used and the temperature outside. Most of the time and at speed its refined, but at low revs stop start, its so clattery to the point id prefer people didnt open their windows Dont hurt me, i know snake oil this that 'tother, but I was wondering if any successful usage of oil additives to reduce the noise of a diesel without doing harm elsewhere Those such as on carbible: https://www.carbibles.com/best-oil-additives-reviewed/ Slick 50 has afterall been around for 20+ years now, if they got sued all the time they wouldnt bother. There's also the train of though manufactures would shoot themselves in the foot if every got 500k out of their engines... aka 'life of the box mate'. Cheers

If the clatter relates to oil changes AND fuel used, then this must surely be a mechanical issue AND a combustion issue?
Additive manufacturers make such weak claims (using weasel words) that they can't easily be sued.

It seems that the question is answered by the poster
Use good fuel, good clean oil, percieved problems go away. Overall cost of this is zero as he wont be shelling out on dubious additives to try to mask the symptoms. If that doesnt fix it talk to a mechanic, something may need adjusting.

well even amazon reviews suggest maintenance isnt always enough and rough running but well maintained cars still run into trouble on synthetics etc. with garsges suggesting replacement piston rings, injectors and so on

Rather than an additive, try Fuchs Titan Supersyn 5w40 or Motul 8100 xcess 5w40, if its a euro 3 (black engine cover, 163 bhp) or if its euro 4 (silver engine cover, 163, 185, 205 bhp) try Mobil 1 FS 0w40 or Petronas Syntium 7000 0w40.
Wynns lifter treatment has also recently proven itself useful in combination with the fuchs titan for a rattly euro3 D5 for a couple of members, though I dont generally advocate oil additives. Also, could it be your DMF? Have you tried pushing clutch pedal down when clattering badly? Or are you auto? Last edited by AndyV7o; Sep 21st, 2018 at 21:02. |

12 months is fine, what mileage you doing? 10-12k is optimal, 15k is ok, 18k is really asking a whole lot of the past its best oil...

Dubious (but not fully opposed) myself tbh, but you seem convinced, just let people know any actual things you find, be it good or bad... 👍

engine gets noisy on high mileage oil.....
engine quiet on clean oil...... what will be saved by throwing in an additive when an earlier oil change will do whats required, and probably make the engine last longer. Your car, your dosh, your choice.
