Default Pre-drilled holes for rear number plate on XC60?

Hello all,

At some point, I want to get my personalised number plate transferred onto my 2019 XC60 and have noticed that the dealer has stuck the rear plate on the boot rather than screw it. Is this because there are no pre-drilled holes?

There are 2 pre-drilled holes for mounting a plate bracket- but I found these to be too large of a diameter- so I ended up drilling new holes. Btw, the liftgate is plastic- so no need to worry about rust. Drill away! 😁

Halfords stock the pertinent plastic white, yellow and black number plate screws.

Of course, if you only drill through the black numbers and letters to affect a fix into material behind the plate, then you'll only need black self-tapping round headed metal screws.

Why not just stick it back on with the adhesive strips you can buy for this, the same as the original number plate.

Having fitted a few plates - and had a few fitted by dealers come off - I now swear by a product called VHB by 3M.

You can buy A4 sheets on Amazon for circa 10-12 quid.

It is a fantastic product and has loads of uses. It is the same stuff that Roadhawk use for attaching their dash cam mount to the screen.

Edit. Currently 13.95 on Amazon for A4 sheet.

And I know how to remove old ones! 1) Dental Floss , used to 'saw' through the adhesive. 2) Meths, to soften the residue, 3) a new Stanley blade to gently scrape the residue off the surfaces, 4) long fingernails to pick the odd bits of residue. I tried fishing line instead of Floss but it didn't work for me (nearly cut my fingers off )

Our local police regularly run sessions where they offer a free 'screwing' service. Seemingly thieves often rip stuck on plates off for their own use.

However you attach them please, please make sure they're level, nothing offends me more than wonky numberplates.

Thanks for all the responses. I’ll probably stick them on if it’s likely that the holes are too big. I’m not brave enough to drill the car myself. I will definitely be making sure the number plate is not wonky, I can stand wonky number plates either. I can’t even cope if the screws are not the same distance from the top and side of the plate.
