AWD Transmission: - Brake failure, ABS, Traction Control, Headlamp failure,

Our car a 2013 XC90 AWD has come up with some concerning issues since it sat on the drive during Lockdown.
First time I drove out, the steering went heavy and warnings came up saying brake failure - stop safely. It cleared after stopping and restarting the car.
All was fine until I started it one day after it had sat on the drive for another two weeks - I left it idling on the drive for ten minutes and the warnings came back - and steering went heavy as it did before.

The garages have looked and they all scratch their heads. Apparently they cannot communicate with the ABS module - but they equally cannot be sure that replacing that module will sort the issue.

The fuses are all correct, the battery has been disconnected and then connected again. Nothing seems to work.

We are getting concerned this will cost a huge amount of money to fix. We seem to have nothing but issues with this car. I wish we had never bought it at times like this. Are XC90's just renowned for being expensive and unreliable ?

Find a competent mechanic. If they give up after failing to communicate with a module, they are not worth a fig.

Just out of interest is your battery fully charged and in good condition?

A failing battery, coupled with extended periods of the car standing idle can throw up all sorts of issues.

Charge the battery fully ( not by driving the car ) and also have it checked properly.

Lastly, under no circumstances allow a garage to just start changing parts and guessing with your wallet.

If the problem persists , find a Volvo independent with Vida or even go to the dealer to get the codes read.

These are complex vehicles but not inherently unreliable.

I second the above.

Charge the battery fully. At least overnight. At best 24hours.

Then reset all codes.

Then drive the car and see what comes up.

Thank you all. The Volvo Garage has told me today they "Think" it is the Central Control Module - but when I questioned what guarantee would I have that this would resole the issue - they can only say "They think" it will.

I spoke to the Volvo mechanic and he said he is 100% sure it is the Electronics Module.

£1243 seems a steep gamble.

New battery at around £100 and clear the DTCs

Then your options are

1. Do what the garage says and replace the CEM with a brand new one, Note: 2nd hand cannot work. Will cost you $$$$$$

2. Remove the CEM and send to Volvo Diagnostic for testing and repair.
He is much MUCH cheaper than a new CEM

PS: you can instruct the garage to remove and send to Volvo Diagnostic for repair if you do not wish to remove yourself.
The repair may take 1 or 2 days longer, but you save a fair bit....

Afternoon , It is not difficult to establish where the issue lies . Taking readings directly from the ABS sensor with an oscilloscope will eliminate them as the fault . Back probing the ABS module connections and performing the same task will eliminate the potential for a broken wire/s .

Also driving along the road with the mechanic performing a live data read as you trundle around will further add to you data . I have recently studied Can-bus fault detection methods and had a whole world of voodoo removed after 40 + years in the trade . Actually seeing the signal forms on the screen & how they compared to known correct signals was crystal clear . Find a competent local indie who will do these for you , throwing parts & hoping is bloody costly & quite often fails to resolve the actual problem .

ALWAYS , ALWAYS diagnose before removing & sending away for test / repair . The fault may be intermittent and may well be another component creating the issue on the same canbus circuit
