Default C70 Seats From Later Car Results In Airbag Light Latches

Hello everyone. I usually live on the Volvo 480 Club Europe forums as the C70 is new-ish to me and hasn't caused me much trouble until now (other than being a shakey mess on anything but a motorway but that's for another forum post one day!)

I have a 2001 C70 in which I replaced the seats with a set from a 2005 model (possibly from a user on here, "Acidicdavey"). The airbag light is on with the new seats installed and cannot be reset. I'd like help with this and any knowledge on whether there is some difference between the two years of car in regards to their airbag wiring.

The reset is being attempted using a mechanic friends expensive handheld device, not a proper Volvo machine. Is it essential that I use a Volvo machine (VADIS?)
I have previously removed the passenger airbag to replace the dashboard, while having the battery disconnected and had no problems afterwards.
  1. Original set up had no air bag light illuminated
  2. Removed the passenger seat, with the battery disconnected, so that I had space inside to transport the replacement seats
  3. Drove the car with one seat removed-- air bag light on, as expected
  4. Installed the new driver & passenger seats with the battery connected (I figured it was on anyway... may have been an error). Airbag light remains on, as expected
  5. Seats out for cleaning and feeding along with steering wheel change, battery disconnected during this job. Airbag light remains on, as expected.
  6. Airbag light remained on, as expected, as it latches on, I understand, even when fault cleared or airbag reconnected
  7. Tried to reset the Airbag light with friend's Scanner machine. Unsuccessful despite multiple attempts.
  8. His Scanner gives code indicating high resistance on the driver's side.
  9. Changed driver's side airbag in new seat with one from old seat (I would not recommend anyone ever tries this, it was a bloody nightmare!)
  10. Airbag still on, cannot reset with Scanner and fault remains the same: high resistance on driver's side

Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between the airbag wiring between earlier and later seats? For example, I think I read something was added that only fires the airbag on an occupied seat at some point in the C70's design.

I am think my next options are to either
  • Cut the airbag connectors out and solder them up to eliminate any bad connection there. I am reluctant to do this though as I'll want to take the seats on the future for some more cleaning and feeding.
  • With guidance from this forum, add a resistor or wire link that needs to be added to my later seats (2005) to make it work with my older car (2001). Any guidance greatfully received!
  • Go to Volvo dealer or a friend, who is quite far away, to use Volvo machine to reset the airbag light that I have latched on.

Hi James

Can't help with whether there is a difference between 2001 and 2005 seats, but unfortunately I think you need access to VADIS to properly sort this out...which will probably mean a Volvo main dealer I guess.

Nice seeing you on here for a change!

David

Hey PNuT, I'm in Horningsea. I think I've been through Red Lodge a few years ago on the way to Barton Mills.

Oh wow, that would be great, thank you so much!

I work shift so am off and at home until February 7th. You'd be welcome any time, or I'm happy to come to your work.

I tried but failed to send a PM with my contact details. Maybe I can reply to one from you?

The car is booked it in to Marshall's Volvo on Thursday for a diagnostic check. In this case, I'll cancel the appointment

Well PNuT came around with his VADIS machine and cleared the SRS light for me, which was much appreciated. Top bloke, thanks very much!
