To all the ones who suggest glow plugs... sorry guys but your so way off the mark ....
First it's common rail !!!
Second glow plugs only ever serve any use in cold weather.
Unless the Op lives in the North Pole your glow plugs wont even bother firing up.
You're better off with air in the system, fuel filter, non return valve, fuel pressure etc route.

There is only one person who recommends checking glowplugs -

...and whilst it is unlikely that the glow plugs are the issue, here in Blighty the last three mornings in my locality the temperature have been -1 with Ice on my screen!!

To the OP, no harm in checking the plugs, you've already got your head under the bonnet.

Air in the system is a good call. Plugging into diagnostics is a must, no point in blindly guessing then throwing time, money and parts at it.

There has also been a previous post of similar here- https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=146743

Might be worth checking for leak back at the injectors.

Thousands of common rail diesels require fully functioning glow plugs all year round.

The reason it eventually starts is because the shaking releases it.
Thanks I will get the mechanic to Check this out.
