Default Flapping belt

Hello. My 2009 D5 xc90 has developed a rather alarming serpentine belt vibration . It's flapping and vibrating badly on tickover and Theres a chattering noise . The belt isn't running smoothly and I'm nervous it will snap. The tensioner and belt replaced 2 yrs ago.. is it the alternator pulley ?

It's you call, but in your position I would be inclined not to drive the car until it is repaired as the risk of catastrophic engine damage if the belt fails or comes adrift is very real.

UPDATE...
Had a mobile mechanic fit a new alternator today and it's completely cured the horrible vibration and noise. The pulley had indeed seized causing the vibration on the belt and the associated chatter noise.

Did he replace the whole alternator or the faulty pulley?

They replaced the whole alternator. It was the original and 12 years old so I thought it was best. But to be honest they didn't offer to swap the pulley so for peace of mind I swapped it for a new one.. it's cured the belt issue and I checked the old pulley against the new one and felt how the old one had locked up where the new one you can reverse the pulley if you twist it . Hope this helps. He said the only things that cause this issue is a locked pulley or a tensioner .in my case it was the pulley.

If it fixes the problem and gives you piece of mind then it was worth every penny.
