I used to use very slightly warm water. Tried some of the Halfords pre-treatment which apparently stops frost from "sticking" but it just seemed to smear and leave it worse.

I tried this, on the advice of a friend, and have to agree that it did clear the windscreen and didn't leave any marks. The problem was that 100yds down the road the entire windscreen was a sheet of ice as the wind froze the water on the windscreen - result? Fine scratches on the windscreen as I had to get out of the car and scrape the ice off

I now find that the cheap Halfords spray is OK for light to medium frost, when it is heavy frost or ice the scraper needs to come out again

The water is a quick clear method while you completely defrost the rest of the car using the same warm water. Once complete the wipers clear the excess water.

I hardly ever use a scraper, I do as I mentioned and sit in the car while it all clears only takes 15 mins. This was was before I had heated seats and heated washers.

Do the heated washer nozzles actually work. Its not been that cold yet but would imagine if driving at 70 mph the wind chill factor could potentially make -5 like -15 - do they still work?

Kev, windchill is about how cold it feels (as a human being) rather than how cold it is. Inanimate object do not feel, and are not affected by windchill.

Isn't 'windchill' the way that a blast freezer works?

That may be the name for what people feel but I thought the concept of a blast freezer was that passing freezing air over something gave a temperature much lower than without the blast?

No, I don't think so. The blast freezer freezes things more quickly, but cannot make them colder than the actual temperature of the air it 'blasts' so to speak. So, in the case of the original post, if the nozzles are warmer than the outside temperature at the start of the drive, then the windchill from driving will cause them to cool more quickly, but will not make them colder then the prevailing air temperature. Stick your head out of the window however, and your face will certainly feel colder!

Blimey, glad Raider Fan isn't around at the moment. What would he make of a discussion on windchill and blast freezers?!!
