Default Brakes not working on one wheel (rear) V70 1998

Hi all - my car is a 1998 V70 2.4 10valve auto (my first Volvo).

I have 3 Problems with her..........

1) I don't think the rear drivers side wheel is braking as the disc surface is dirty and rusty and the others are shiny

2) the handbrake is not holding the car at all

Is there a connection between the two problems - I've read on this site about adjusting the handbrake at the drum (12 o'clock position) and a nut between the two front seats in the arm rest.

Problem 3) the car pulls to the left if I let go of the steering wheel, I took it into kwik fit for a 4 wheel laser alignment but they said that they had adjusted it as far as possible with no effect and something must be wrong with the suspension ie bent/twisted track rod or something like that.

Are these common problems for the V70 and does anyone have any tips....?

Thanks you for reading this and any help would be very welcome.

Cheers......!

First thoughts... You should really be in the correct forum for the V70.

The rear brakes are a hybrid system in that the drum brakes and discs on the back, although being part of the same lump of metal are two distinct pieces of hardware. It is a system where the drum is attached to the disc.

The rusty disc gives the appearance of showing a calliper that had seized. You need to get that freed - and as soon as possible.

It also sounds like the handbrake needs adjustment - at the least. There are several threads in the V70 forum discussing how to set them up - or, if necessary, change the brake shoes. Again, a fairly high-priority job.

Also, in the V70 forum, there is a sticky thread about 'tramlining' that would be worth a read to help diagnose possible reasons as to why the car may not be going in a straight line. However, on British roads, most cars have a tendency to drift a little to the left because of the camber of the road. Are your tyre pressures really spot on?
