Default Do i have a supect ETM?

I have a 51 plate 2.4 v70, does this fall into the "at risk" Category? Is there a way of checking via chassis no? or a definate way of identifying if its a suspect or replaced. No history with car but low mileage 61k
Thanks
Russell

Is it a Turbo engine or not?

You could take a picture of the engine bay that way someone can tell you which ETM is fitted, being a 51 plate it could very well have the crap ETM - Mike

The ETM can be found on both turbo and N/A engines, it's just that on the non turbo engines the ETM is much easier to locate, simply follow the rubber pipe from the airfilter housing to where it couples to the inlet manifold and thats the ETM.
On a Turbo model the ETM is burried under the inlet manifold and is much harder to see - Mike

NO.!

Stick yer 'ead under the bonnet and see if you have a set up like in the attached pic...see the ETM at the end (left) of the pipe from the air box...that's a Marelli (crap) ETM on a NON turbo car..on a turbo it's positioned much lower down and harder to see/work on..

ok, i have the non turbo car, and i have the magnetti marrelli etm. Is this a case of when its going to fail, not if? Is there anything i can do to prolong its inevitable short life?

In essence..YES....but it may have been replaced in the past.? (the general theory is that an original ETM will have a white sticker...and a replacement unit will have a yellow sticker..but still the same "questionable" design of course))
My V70 has the same ETM..and as far as I know, is original (white sticker)...but it's still ok at 102k miles.!!!
The only thing you can really do is to make sure that the butterfly flaps in the ETM are cleaned and clear of crud/carbon....simple job. Just take the air pipe of at the ETM end and you will see the butterflies. Just clean them, and the general area around them, particularly where they meet the body/throat of the ETM.
If it eventually goes belly up, then you can either get the original one refurbed or replace with a totally new unit. (the former being cheaper than the latter)

There are a few options when it does go belly up:

1/ Exmodex for a replacement ETM fitted with non contact transducer, good solution but rather costly.

2/ bbaremanufacturing to repair your ETM cost around £300

3/ A forum member is offering to repair ETM's for just under £100 using non contact digital pots, probably the cheapest and technically best approach.

If/ when mine next packs in I will be going digital non contact, first one packed up at 112K, bba repaired it and its still going strong at close to 150K - Mike

Yep...digital non-contact for me too, Mike...when it happens.!!
Yours did well to go to 112k miles though..I'm sure I read somewhere (possibly Matthews site) that something like 94% go belly up before 100k.??..so with mine at 102k, I can't be far away from the inevitable...LOL
