Default engine service required

Right just a quick one guys...
got in 2005 xc90 last night after being out for a few hours...once i accelerated off a warning light with 'engine service required' popped up with an instant loss of power.. it then wouldn't accelerate over 2000 revs...my car had a general service about 4 months ago..
i parked up over night and left it and went to check this morning..
when i first turned car on the message wasnt there nor was it there for 500 yards or so and car was as normal.... then again all of a sudden it had the message pop up and loss of power...
any ideas at all guys before i start ringing up garages?

many thanks oliver

Lots of things will contribute towards engine service required.
I had the warning same like you said.
When the starts warning wont wont be there but when revving it comes up and then if the engine is switched on no warning in the message.

What I had was code 6805 fault. There was a vacuum leak. The rear engine mount was shot and bleeding vacuum. I changed the mount it is fine now.

But there are lots of possibilities apart form this like blown intercooler pipes and Turbo governor fault, or Turbo control valve fault.

First step is get the codes read from the car and then proceed or else you will be moving in circles only.

That's the famous "Limp (Home) Mode".

Very common in 2003-2005 models. You will have to read the codes, but probably an overboost caused by sticky turbo inlet guide vanes. After warming up they often ease so you don't get the issue. Can also be caused by vacuum leaks (in the tubing or engine mounts) and/or faulty TCV (turbo control valve).

Read the DTCs

Yes and Yes.

A generic OBDII reader might give an indication of the area where a problem lies but VIDA/DiCE is really what you need. It gives detailed fault codes and diagnosis.

If you drop into Limp Mode just pull over, switch off the engine then start again - it should clear. Avoid harsh accelerations when cold.

As above could be many things. Dirty fuel filter can cause this issue as well. You really need the car read with vida.

Mine did exactly the same on Friday... with the car 20 miles away... and me another 30. Wife was not impressed.

So of all the things it COULD be... primary candidate after reading the codes is crapped up fuel filter. So £20 for a new one and I'm gonna get jiggy with it.

I know one of my engine mounts is being naughty due to the clunking, fingers crossed it's not the back one

Well there you have it...

One fuel filter has cleared out 8 error code in VIDA. Job sorted

And for the record, I'm not sure why all the documentation says less than 3/4's tank. I had no choice but to swap it out with the tank at nearly full (the wife, for the first time EVER decides to fill the tank???) and no ill effects
