What if you have no choice?
1 Example. There is engine oil plug above crank shaft seal. Very common problem - engine oil starts leaking through that plug especially in earlier cars. Plug costs pennies but repair cost can be massive. To get it done you need to remove complete gearbox and all the necessary bits. Good luck finding a garage which can solve that kind of problem for £200

Try telling that to the CV stub axle that refused to come out of the hub under 50 tonne of pressure needing both the hub and CV joint to be replaced. The speed sensor ring is £6. A cracked one is an MOT fail as the ABS light is on, plus the mechanics of the braking were severely buggered.

So yeah, I'll use the garage again as that cost was mates rates

I suppose your right in that those who don't have the neccesary skill set or facilities have limited options re garages/mechanics....

tbh I am aware of most of the little "tricks" I was really trying to identify which tasks I would need to complete next, that could also improve mpg...

such as:
  1. EGR Clean?
  2. DPF replacement/clean?
  3. Diesel purge
  4. Fuel filter?

etc.

Was just trying to work out which could improve mpg... Thanks

Fuel filter should be replaced as part of your regular annual service
So if the vehicle has been serviced properly, it won't be an issue

Likewise the DPF should be cleaned automatically anyway during normal regen cycles (around ever 1.5 to 2 tanks of fuel)

The EGR valve helps in emissions control and does not normally get touched during regular service.

So if you wish to tackle one job that likely has not been done, clean the EGR.
