Prefer a rattley tappet to a rapper!

Wynns hydraulic lifter treatment. Took a good few weeks and about 1500 miles, but it’s suddenly gone significantly quieter. Can only surmise it’s been slowly dissolving the gunk that was blocking a lifter oil way.

I never believed it would do anything and was a last gasp effort before tearing the top end apart.

Plus he's got a heavier 5w40 in there too.
Be interesting come next service, try lighter oil again see if tappets clatter again, or stick with whats working cos if it ain't broke....

The 5w40 cleared a lot of the racket instantly, but left me with a definite tappet rattle. It’s that that’s just shut up. 👍

Yeah, I'm just pre-empting your future quandry!

I suppose if the rest of the engine was really that rattly then owt lighter probably wont be on the consideration list...

My service isnt due till april, the engine is pretty sweet, clean, n healthy, just very light tappet noise on scarce random mornings, very infrequent, but me being me Im pondering, and will continue to ponder until april, which oil to put in, even though itll probably just be the cheapest of my top 5 most suitable oils for the D5
