Angry knackered V70 T5 help!!

Hi there, whilst I was away serving in Afghanistan, my wife has had an engine failure with our 00 V70 T5. She described the 'syptoms' as follows: she initially pulled off and the car stalled, there was no noise it just stopped. She restarted the engine and drove it approx 50 metres when the engine stalled again, this time it wouldn't restart. When the recovery mechanic arrived the battery was flat so he tried to restart the car with jump leads. Again, the car wouldn't start and now there was also a slight knocking noise coming from the engine. My wife finally managed to get the car towed to a garage who informed her that she required a complete new engine due to a broken camshaft, which they quoted her at 2500 euros. (i'm based out in Germany at the moment now i'm back from Afghan).
Guys, can anyone shed any light on the problem? I'm seriously missing driving the T5, and can't really afford to spend 2500 euro's on a new engine, so any advice or handy hints and tips would be most welcome. Many thanks. Wayne
