As you say, John, very interesting. I don't think my '74 TE has a rear ARB, but its been so long since I was under it I may be wrong! Because of this, when next at the car will grovel under it and check plus measure both ARB diameters (my car is stock). Agree springs seem new, so what else might be under there?
Maybe someone might know from the chassis number which TEs went where originally - I sadly don't. Body does seem free from rot in the usual 164 places, so hopefully not much to do before getting it legal again. John - if you can get to see it please share your findings. Incidentally, far more dust on this car than on the 142S I exhumed last winter, after its 26 year rest! Still, its garage was brick with a felt roof so quite cosy and dry: just about all rubber items perished though Paul |

Ah well, that is a bit too far to drive isn't it!
I hadn't checked Garth's personal profile, was just going by "Newcastle" under his user name. I had guessed what NSW on the plate probably meant, but as I'd always thought Garth was fairly local to me, I assumed the car was a personal import. Anyway, some more photos will have to do! John |

1st day of 164 ownership
the car had a few surprises in store for me today parts of it have cleaned up very well, all the flat panels, bonnet, boot, roof appear to be sunburnt the clear laquer had become near white in places i've been treating it in a way a panelbeater might likely disapprove of as rubbing compound was helping it, albeit very slowly i decided to get nasty with it using a pot scrubber that at least is removing the powdery lacquer will cut and wax after that. It wont make it perfect but it is improving the appearance. Rust has been found lower right windscreen area remarkably good everywhere else. Apart from that my injector lines decided to behave like a fountain they really can spray a lot of fuel in a short time. Problem solved by replacing them all. Only other issue it seems to have the aux air valve is stuck on high idle about 2000 rpm, Blocking the hose running back to the air filter has solved that for now

update
The weather finally dried out today, making rolling about under the car a slightly less unpleasant task. the previous owner must have really loved her at some stage the front wishbones are sporting yellow urethane bushes-as is the rather puny looking front ARB. Starting to become confident in her ability to pass the roadworthy test. Just 1 thing i know is needed underneath-- the panhard rod bushes have seen better days, I'm wondering if all this shiny new stuff underneath was an attempt to cure bad handling due to a worn out panhard bush? 4 new tyres fitted today, Seat covers to be fitted a rear quarter window to find, Panhard bushings then its over the pits for its checkover

A question for John
looking at my upper front wishbones and their bushes, The forward facing bush is fitted as I expected to see it with the wide part facing forward, but the top rear bush is reversed--that is pressed in from the inside of the wishbone. Is this some trick to radically alter caster angles or normal for a 164? I know of no other cars to compare it with.
