It says to give a long press. You should get a message saying the ignition is on. Press "OK" on the indicator stalk and rotate the wheel to reach the oil level sensor. If it's greyed out then the engine is running or too hot. It must be done with a cold engine. Also it is not the current oil level but the average level over the last 20 Km.

You can get a "Police" full size dipstick fitted for £71. Besides being able to reach it easily and get an instant reading any time, it is made of metal and more robust than the plastic one which is liable to shear off when it gets old and brittle.

The electronic one will warn you though if the level goes out of spec. If it happens on a journey though you won't be able to check the level until the engine cools down unless you can use a physical dipstick.

Thank you for the last post - perhaps there should be a sticky thread to contain corrections to the manuals.

Just a note that it took the service manager at my Volvo dealership two tries with no luck, then the head mechanic to come out before we could get the oil level to display on my XC60 R-Design D4 (5 cyl). And yes, I had RTFM.

My manual is about 200 pages long, almost all of which has no relation to the car I purchased (much info about options only fitted to the very top-end cars). So important details are glossed over or are just incorrect (try and replace a front indicator bulb from the bulb number shown).

There is a method posted here (different Volve, same engine) but I believe other factors must also be satisfied as the published info doesn't always seem to work.

The physical dipstick is now an option on the Volvo new car configurator. Choose the Police Spec option.

It's not on there but neither is the Police Spec option for the D5 now.

Perhaps it was becoming a problem calling it the 'Police' specification option.
However, I am sure the dealer can retro-fit this. I think it costs about £70 if I recall a post from last year.

Had mine fitted 18 months ago.
