Burning rubber smell after driving. Anyone else had this?
Driving into work today – around 40 miles on the motorway, got out of the XC90 and noticed a strong smell of hot rubber – similar to a tyre smell after a skid.
Had a good look around the car and could not see anything obvious. Drove home tonight with no noticeable smell problem at all. Has anyone else here experienced a sudden rubber smell that then just disappeared as fast as it appeared? Could it have possibly been related to the DPF going through a high temperature regeneration cycle causing some rubber components nearby to heat up a tad too much? Cars only done 3K miles. A bit of a mystery…

It's the DPF regeneration cycle. Off putting isn't it.

I get that smell sometimes... last time i had it was on a thrash over the Duke's pass.
That said I don't think it's the same cause as yours |

Volvo should really warn you about this as I kept thinking I was going to suddenly watch my XC90 burst into flames in the car park! Quite unsettling.
Thank goodness I have GAP+VRI so if it does go up in smoke I can order another brand new full list price XC90 Exec under the insurance policy.

Burning Smell / XC90 Diesel

5000 miles on and it is still making the smell .... so I enquire with the excellent independent Volvo specialist / local mechanic, who services my ageing V70 beautifully - he tells me exactly what you have outlined above. Phew! Indeed, why is there not special mention of this on collecting the vehicle. As above, with GAP insurance etc on a new car, I have had some degree of peace of mind (but it's not exactly comforting to think my wife and kids could be out when it spontaneously combusts)! They don't come with a warranty. We've even thought of getting rid of the car even though otherwise we love it! Can now rest in peace. Incidentally, I'm sure most of you are aware, it is the DPF which kills fuel economy - how crazy is that. I know it is lighter, but our V70 will do 50mpg without breaking a sweat (vs 29.5mpg for the XC90 when driven most respectfully over a variety of journeys). |

Basically the ECU triggers the car to run rich for short periods to increase the cars exhaust temperature which in turn burns off the collected soot.
See here for some more details.... http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice...e-filters.html |
