Folding Safety Grille
The father-in-law has an XC70 which has a folding steel grille which is attached to the ceiling anchor points and folds down behind the rear headrests. It's great, as most of the time it is out of the way, but on the odd occasion he comes to pickup our dog, it provides an extra bit of safety to stop the dog coming forward in the event of an accident.
On the V60 we have a mesh load protector that mounts on the back of the seats and pulls up, and I had a similar one on my old Jag X-type. I've got a folding load protector net that came with my car, but it's not as rigid as other ones. The dog goes in the car maybe once or twice a month, so most of the time, I don't want a full fixed grille in the back, as it gets in the rear view, and prevents 3rd row being pulled up. One that folded from the ceiling ala XC70 would be really good. Volvo don't seem to do one for the XC90, does anyone know of any aftermarket manufacturers of such? |

As far as I know, there is no foldable steel barrier on the market for the XC90.
The reason(ing) seems to be that they are not useful in cars with (possibly) 3 rows.

What Gaby said. Not sure what's the reason behind it..
The only one I know of is this: https://www.volvocars.com/uk/accesso...tegoryId=36576 Interestingly, they offer a folding one for XC60- but I'm not confident that this one can be fitted to the 90.. |

Travall also has a barrier for the XC90, but it is not foldable either:
https://www.travall.co.uk/volvo/xc90...-guard-tdg1487 We also found the barrier in our XC70 much more useful, the one in the XC90 has to be removed. Not only does this take some time to do, but where do you leave it if you have to expand the cargo area on location? And since Volvo delivers a 5-seater, I don't see why the design of the barrier couldn't be adapted to be foldable. I think the same problem existed with the previous generation XC60 and XC90, fodable for the XC60, not so for the XC90.

My opinion is thus:
A foldable barrier relies on the strength of the seat backs for support. In the XC70 the seat backs directly connect to the body at the top of the rear wheel arch. Therefore the seats are strong enough. In the XC90 the seat backs are self supporting, so therefore cannot accept the additional loading of the foldable grille. Not sure about the XC60 and how the rear seat backs are supported.

The above may be true for a 7-seater, but in a 5-seater the seats are fixed in the same way as in the XC70.

I have noticed the ceiling anchor points arent located in line with the middle row, but rather in between row 2 and row 3, so even if they made one now, or an aftermarket did, it wouldnt fold against the back rests as in the XC70.
Good points about the row 2 seats not being anchored at the top, makes sense |
