Hi
Since my last post I have flushed the cooling system with 100+ litres of water until it was visibly clear, changed the thermostat as it didn’t previously get to temperature, replaced the oil cooler with one from a XC breaker, fitted new expansion tank refilled and and done 1-2 miles with still some grey water which I have flushed out again. Yesterday I let it tick over to until the the temp needle was in the middle, when I switched off there were some deposits the grey coolant in the tank but not much, again I emptied the expansion tank and refilled. Today I’ve driven about 6 miles and the coolant tank is looking pretty black again ! Could it be residue from the previous failed oil cooler that’s circulating due to getting hotter etc from a longer run, or it that just wishful thinking ? Is it safe to drive a short distance with oil cooler water pipes joined (to bypass the cooler), need to find were the oil is coming from ? Not sure if it’s the cooler, someone mentioned the gearbox cooler in the radiator and someone else mentioned the turbo ?

I've heard garages say to drive a few hundred kilometers, then flush the coolant. Then drive another few hundred kms, and flush again. And then again. It takes a while to get all the oil out of the coolant channels and hoses and pipes.
