Default Popping in exhaust

I have a popping noise in the exhaust on acceleration, it is not a loud backfire, just an intermittent popping. It seems to lessen when the engine is hot. Any ideas please?

a valve leaking? A compression test on a hot engine may reveal something .

Initial thoughts, given your other recent threads, would indicate an over fuelling issue. If the ECT sensor is sending out incorrect info to the ECU it will in turn have a knock on effect on the O2 sensor readings.

Do you have means of reading live data?

Yes I was thinking along those lines. I have changed the O2 sensor & the coolant temp sensor. The popping was there before I changed them and has not changed. I do not have means of checking live data. I s it possible that a leaking exhaust could be causing an imbalance in the air fuel ratio. I have not been able to find a leak in any of the hoses.

I had a P1 V40 T4 some years ago, same engine minus a cylinder, and when I first purchased the car it had a slight metallic like cracking sound on starting which then went away after a couple of minutes running. It turned out to be missing exhaust manifold nuts/studs and one damaged gasket allowing gasses to escape.

I don’t believe it'll affect the air to fuel ratio but the O2 sensor readings won't tally. It would be great if you could get yourself one of those apps to read live data. I think 4x4 posted the links to ones that work on early OBDII.

Since fitting the ECT sensor has your temp gauge returned to 3 o'clock?

It didn't return to 3 oclock until I replaced the temp sensor.
I'll look back at 4 x 4s post thanks and see if I can get one sorted. Thanks
