Engine: TD: - Engine management light

Hi , following a rebuild after the cambelt snapped on my R reg TDI the engine management light has been on . I ve scanned with an OBD2 with no success . Just wondering if anyone has any ideas or experience with similar. many thanks.

Almost certainly a dynamic timing error. The timing is usually adjusted with the aid of software but it can be set with with a dial gauge. Fine adjustments are made by moving the tensioner and idler pulleys on the injection pump belt which allows an adjustment of about +/- 2 to 3 degrees; a total range of 4 to 6 degrees.

A 1998 Tdi is not fully OBD compliant and most generic code readers won't work. So far as I recall, it will have the MSA15.7 ECU and the preferred software is VOL-FCR

However if you have an android phone and a good ELM327 dongle the 850OBD2 app from Xiaotec will allow you to measure and hence adjust the dynamic timing. It's what I use myself. It has a few quirks but it will also read the TCM, SRS and ABS modules and perform tests.
