V50 T5 Haynes Manuals
My son has just bought a 2004 V50 T5 110000mls with FVSH, we are collecting on Saturday.
Being a keen DIY nut and having continuously owned Volvos for the last 40 years - current 1997 V40 355000mls - I have been searching for a Haynes manual. We intend to check everything over and in particular change the timing belt etc. before he starts using it. The V50 manual 4731 covers the basics but does not include the T5 specifics. The V70 manual 3573 96 - 99 does include the T5 items, so my question is: Does any one know if the V70 T5 items will still be pertinent to the V50 T5 or are we looking at a completely different spec. What I was considering is buying both manuals to cover all eventualities. If this would not work are there other manuals available that would cover the T5 bits. I have always been a big fan of Haynes over the years and firmly believe in having the manual for the car, any special tools for the job and using the best parts and consumables. Any advice gladly received. Ian. |

If you find a relevant one let me know I spent some time looking but could never find one that matched my 2010 v50 t5.

The 2004+ T5 engine is different to the older models, in the S40 and V50 it is a 'compact' engine and described as a low friction unit.
Timing belt must be changed at 100K miles or 10 years, most chicken out and do it at 8 years, having said that a broken belt is *very* rare, broken tensioners not so rare. I changed mine at 65K miles (at 8 years) because one of the tensioners was noisy. Had the water pump done at the same time. The original Oil Breather/Diaphragm unit fails on these cars at around 8 years so this is likely to have been done, they cost about £160 but are a pig to fit (approx 5 hrs) also the breather pipes to/from the unit have been upgraded and should be ordered with the Diaphragm. The Fuel Pressure Sensor on the end of the fuel rail can give trouble (it tells the fuel pump what it needs) and is signaled by hesitant performance - nice cheap easy fix for someone handy though. Other than that all I've needed is spark plugs (cheap enough to change every 15K miles) and just oil + filters. Now you've wrenched the car from the main dealer's 'care' you can get on with servicing it properly - first up would be a gearbox oil change and change the PAS fluid, I bet it's crying out for those already oh and run it on Super Unleaded, it'll pay for itself in better MPG, mine's NEVER had any 95 ron in my ownership. The M66 gearbox is a peach, nice short throws and positive, it's tough too having come from the previous 'R' models. One thing the car will benefit from is the upgraded rear lower engine mount as these are too weak and allow the engine to lurch, the are very cheap and easy to fit. Biggest problem with these cars is the Ford-sourced suspension, this has been a pain in the rear for the last 5 years for me.

Welton,
Thanks for the very useful info; I agree with you totally. This type of exchange of info is what makes forums so great and this forum is one of the best. I have never been one to skimp on servicing and believe in doing most jobs myself and doing it correctly, then find independent specialists for the technical stuff i.e. Air con. My son is in the same mould. |

The machine I use for Vida 2013A is just an old Dell with 2GB RAM and 120GB HDD so nothing special. I've has it running XP, Win7, Win8, Win8.1 both straight on the machine and as a Virtual Machine (VM) too. I've also used all versions of IE (8,9,10,11) and still not had issues running Vida. PM me. |
