Volvo S80 engine cleaning
Hi everyone.
I don’t do detailing very often, but I do a deep clean to my cars once in a while. Only recently bought a DA machine and some products which I hope to use soon. Now that most mechanical work is done on the S80, it‘s time to do the cosmetic side of things. A couple of weeks ago cleaned the engine of the S80. Very pleased with the result! You made a nice job of it Genti, I assume that's short for Gentian? one has Albanian friends and a few of them are Gent's or Genti's
Hope you get the rust sorted and don't be paying £1000 for it either, you will find someone who will do it for you for around the £200 mark, look around for a welder rather than a mechanic but make sure he knows what he's doing as carpets can go up without realising as the heat of the weld spreads, that white smoke might just be the heat of the exhaust and condensation in the pipe on a cold day, hth. |

probably looking at two extremes of the scale there, you can find someone cheaper than a grand no doubt but if someone quoted me £200 I'd very much want to watch them and make sure they weren't just stuffing it with tin foil and fillering over the top lol
I'd probably just do it myself to be honest, the worst part of the cost would be getting the paint job done at the end, professionally blended in and looking good |

I had the two rear spring hangers welded on a 2.8i Capri about 30 years ago and that cost me £60 iirc, when I got under for a look he'd basically replaced parts of the rear floor with shiny steel plates, went through the mot fine like it, Given the age of Gentil's car it's not really essential that it looks factory but it will need all that rot cutting out and replacing with good metal, I hope he gets it sorted as even though it's old and been round the world you can tell it's still a special car to him plus it would be a shame if it was the end of the car. |

Can you still get panels for these cars instead of cutting off something else? Though if it was me I'd be happy with fabricated sections and filler as long as I knew it was only cosmetic and solid underneath

I don't think there will be fabricated panels for that area if there's any at all, however there might be for a different car/brand that may well be a reasonable substitute, a good welder/metal worker should be able to fashion something up for him if the rot is external, I didn't look at it too hard but it's possible the inner structure is also rotted out and that then makes it a bit more involved and sadly beyond an economic repair, it really needs a hobbyist enthusiast welder who will do it for him for beer tokens and a bit of company, such a person in a car club might exist somewhere or if he feels capable he could read up on how to weld and hire a welder and do it himself, looking at his progress so far I'd say he's well capable of tackling it himself.

The people I got the quote from professional welders and the reason was due to the amount of fabrication needed in those areas, which would take up most of the time. I was advised to cut areas from donor cars to weld on my car as it would significantly reduce the cost. The only donor cars I found were in the midlands, but they won’t post and it’s a 5 hour return trip for me and I have hardly any annual leave left. The search for parts continues. |

Can’t get panels for theses areas. If I could, I would do an ugly but structurally safe job as most is hidden by sill and wheel arch covers, so that is an option. Trouble is, there are massive holes, so I don’t know how the missing metal looks like. Those sill/arch covers looks like they are riveted in place, so I have to cut the metal rivets!
