V90 B4 economy
I was thinking about getting a V90 B4 diesel but now I see it’s only available in Plus specification and nearly £50k. Therefore thinking of maybe just going for Core with the B4 petrol engine but concerned in such a big car the economy won’t be good. Has anyone got one to give me any information on what I could expect?
My commute is 80 miles. About half motorway then the other half is 50mph dual carriageway but with a lot of heavy traffic Is mid 40s mpg unrealistic? |

Combined fuel consumption is stated as 40.4mpg, so depending on how you drive and how much of that driving will be stop start, it may be possible to squeeze mid 40's out of it.
My last 2 cars had 3 lit 6 cylinder engines, no mild hybrids and in both I was able to regularly achieve 37-39mpg with gentle commuting, with a best of 43mpg when I combined the gentle driving with a speed of max 60mph. Owners may be able to give some real info, but end of the day it will be totally dependant on the traffic and how you drive. |

It sounds like you are already doing the sums yourself, so surely it makes sense to buy an approved used diesel for less money and still get over 50mpg ? There's several very low mileage ones at £40-45k on Autotrader?
I spent £20k and have averaged 71 mpg in a V60, but if more of my current mileage would have been motorway, I would have got a loaded Golf GTD estate and averaged 55-60mpg. Last edited by Ulrikas PA; Aug 7th, 2022 at 09:14. |

I have had a B4 V90 inscription (petrol) since the start of March.
Mileage all depends on how you drive… Round town, I am lucky to get near the high 20’s. On a good run, economy is much better. Did a 100 mile run a couple of days ago, driving like a grandad at between 55 and 60mph, and got the average MPG up to 53 mpg!….. had a little fun putting my foot down after that & it soon reduced!!!! This is definitely a long distance cruiser and MPG will be great on a run at a sensible speed…… definitely not a short hop round town car!

Thanks for your reply. Yes a used diesel could make sense. Especially one of these mild hybrid ones as they appear to get classed as a hybrid so may escape any diesel penalties later The Golf GTD is an interesting idea thought not sure the Golf is big enough for all the family stuff |

Sticking to 70mph, yes, looking at the very low 40’s on a run…. Amazing what difference 10-15 mph more makes on economy….but for the big lump it is, I’m more than happy with it on a long run…..and put up with the ****ty economy around town (that’ll be the 1.5 mile drive to work🤣

Mid 40s is likely to be, sit in car, set everything up etc then start and drive to local A road/dual carriageway/motorway and sit in inside lane preferably behind a large lorry for wind resistance. I would say it’s doable but not easy. Forget any short journeys or fun however. Unfortunatly a commute of your length is prime diesel territory. |
