C30 - What's that seal?
Hi All,
I've noticed this seal is falling apart. Probably too old and too much hot weather . 1) What is it for? is it some car battery cooling channel seal? 2) How is it called? So I can order one online... Bonus question: I noticed the car isn't starting as flawlessly as usual lately. Is it time to replace the battery? Thanks all and have a great day! Last edited by method; Jun 2nd, 2020 at 15:27. |

It's to channel "battery gases" to the atmosphere...a "so-called" environmental solution (Elon Musk eat your heart out).

I agree with lockstock, as far as I'm aware it's a battery 'cooling' duct not a gas vent.
The foam 'gasket' is probably there to stop it whistling at high speeds, just make a new one using foam insulation or something.

Always wondered what the cut out on the battery was for, 1.6d has no vent tube in the bonnet.

Thats to allow any small rodents a way of escaping the engine bays temps. Rodents as you presumably know adore nice snug places and a nice warm battery with lovely plasticy covered cables is just tickety boo for old rattus norvegicus! Under some eu directive much similar to the one which ensures new cattle grids have ramps out to allow hedehogs and other small or avian creatures a neans to escape a horrible hungry fate. The 'escape channel' is to keep them and any endangered insects safe.
😐
